For the benefit of all our readers (more than 10,000 now) we decided to try a new venue for tea today. It was an interesting experience at the Portrait Gallery Cafe at Harthill Hall. It is just off the B5056, before you turn right towards Bakewell & left to Youlgreave. The tea room is in a Victorian wooden ‘building’, with chandeliers, gold framed antique paintings & ‘thrones’. Don chose the ‘throne’, (he wanted me make sure that you all know that it is really a large gold embossed chair and not a you-know -what). As we pointed out to the very nice waitress the tea & apple cake was very nice but the coffee & Audrey’s scone left a lot to be desired. When there are so many other good venues around we all felt that we wouldn’t rush back in hurry, but maybe we were just unlucky.

Hope you let Aud have a bit of your tea and apple cake to make up for the manky scone. It’s sooooooo disappointing to choose badly when out for tea!
Of course I did, what are friends for, but Don moaned that he had the end piece with a crust and no-one shared with him!

There is a definite moral here – this morning Aud brought some warm, freshly baked scones around for Ben & I to enjoy with our ‘late’ morning tea. They were the best – light, fluffy, deep and scrumptious – made to Aud’s secret recipe. We nearly dipped out because Aud had run out of one of the ingredients but fortunately we have our wonderful shop & Janet was able to save the day.

Me and my freind were recently served food from the cafe. The cakes were dried out and we won’t be visiting or eating there again in a hurry either.
