At a recent power lunch to discuss strategy with the young challenger, i foolishly challenged him £50 to cycle up Parwich Hill (the hill race route) do you think my money is safe?

I will run with a black arm-band as a mark of respect.

BTW Mine’s a chicken ticca madras strength with pilau rice, saag paneer bhaji and a peshawri naan.

Graham, how can you call yourself a knackered has-been? Surely i fall into that category, but the curry sounds a good idea and i will offer to drive the young challenger to Ashbourne to collect the afore mentioned curries (plus beer) if he does beat you.
As for myself, i have decided to retire from my competitive running career on a high after my recent victory in the hill race.

Well I love a challenge, but I do know its only a matter of time before all I ever get to see of you is a clean pair of heels disappearing off into the distance.

However, on this occasion, I feel there is life in the old legs yet, so I accept your challenge – but remember, it’s a long walk to Ashbourne, especially when you’ve been whooped in the morning by a 45 year old talentless has-been!

Having just read the http://www.runningwithdavid.com website on this event me and my brother and sisters are going to run the big one like we did last year as we can beat half the adults and don`t need to just do a mile long course. Not worth getting out of bed for my dad says. If you are going to sweat make it worth while…… How about a bet Graham? 1st one back orders the curry and 2nd one back has to collect and pay? Since I can`t drive looks like I am going to have to beat you and the great Roberto too!!!!

Yes, that’s right Peter, the Bradbourne race is rather grandly called a “fell race” even though it’s a good 100 miles south of the nearest proper fell. I think its a combination of “runner-speak” for qualitatively describing the amount of climb in a run, and of course, to make us feel much better about the fact that we are exhausted at the finish – after all it’s a “fell race”!

Do the hills around Bradbourne count as fells? Even though there are some steep slopes, they are not what would be called ‘fells’ up north.
