Derbyshire County Council 2011 Residents Survey

Derbyshire County Council are conducting a survey to gather residents’ opinions on the services that the council provides, and to find out how satisfied residents are with the area in which they live.
Although paper copies are being distributed, you can also opt to complete and submit the survey online. The closing date for this survey is October 31st 2011.

Wirksworth Festival this Weekend

Visual Art Trails Weekend 10th – 11th September
The fantastic opening weekend when art takes over the town. The whole town becomes a gallery with more than 170 artists and makers showing their work in private homes, historic building, gardens, shop windows and churches. A great chance to buy affordable art, meet the artists and take a peek at some of Derbyshire’s best interiors!
Stay for the whole day and enjoy our FREE events in the evening.
Just opened in April 2011, the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway Wirksworth to Duffield line will be running Festival Specials, starting from 9:10am from Duffield with the last train from Wirksworth at 6:20pm.
Tickets for the Art and Architecture Trail are £5 per person with under 18s free. Tickets will be available on the day only.

The Strongman Competition – Video

Many thanks to Tim Yeomans for videoing last Saturday’s outstanding Strongman Competition. Tim has edited the whole three hour event down to a marvellous 10 minute film which captures the spirit of this event; the strength and determination of the competitors, the music of The A52s and the enjoyment of the crowds. Let’s hope that this event becomes a regular part of the village calendar.

Amanda B and Rick G have sent us the following message:
Hi to anyone who appreciates a nice ale at a good price and maybe a nice spot of lunch too. Recently visited The Druid Inn in Birchover; it’s been a bit erratic for ages having been under changing management. However a new couple have just taken it over (in the past 6 weeks) and are really keen to make a go of it. Beers (numerous) are VERY well priced, as is a very decent glass of wine. Their new bar/lunch menu is just good old pub food without fancy frills although the downstair restauraunt promises more flair. The bar snacks make it worth a visit for a lunchtime pint though as does the selection of beers on offer. Their new opening times are basically every day lunchtimes and evenings (bar sunday eve) but they accept reservations for weekends when they are busy. After our flying trip there on Sun we’ll definitely be back.

Thank you all of you who helped look for Lucky and spread the word about the fact that she was missing. Jack and I went on a two hour drive yesterday putting up posters and delivering leaflets in the surrounding area resulting in a call from Sitterlow Farm to say that she had been seen there. So we collected her last night and she is back home safe and sound.

Swimming underwater: Part Sixteen

The Grand Finale.
Open Water 3 and Open Water 4, Swanage, Tanville Ledges! It’s 28ºC. I’m in a wet suit, hood, gloves and boots. I have 10kg of weights around my waist and 2kg of ankle weights. We are diving in salt water from a boat in a controlled environment. I have 230psi in my tank and we are about to do our giant stride!
Skills: Equipment preparation, donning and adjustment. Pre-dive safety check. Entry and weight check. 5 point descent. Buoyancy control/Oral inflation fin pivot. Full mask flood and clear. Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent. Cramp removal. Free descent. Underwater exploration. 5 Point Ascent with a 3 minute safety stop (hovering the correct way up for a change!) and a tired diver tow (I was the tired diver by the end of that!).
16º at the surface, 16º bottom temperature and 7.7 depth. Done, and it all went well.

Improving the way Derbyshire’s roads are gritted!

Winter may seem a little way off but it is only 11 weeks to the same time that we were hit by the freezing weather and deep snow in 2010. Derbyshire County Council has opened a consultation document asking for our views about improving the gritting of the roads. Plans for our community appear to be no different from in previous years, but please do go online and submit your views by Wednesday 12th October. These forms can also be picked up from the library.
The primary roads planned to be gritted are A515 and the B5056. (more…)

Quality of Life Survey from DCC

Derbyshire County Council have sent out 6,000 copies of a survey to gather residents’ opinions on the services that are provided and to find out how satisfied residents are with the area in which they live. This survey is also available online.
The questionnaire asks you to think about ‘your local area’, which is classed as within 15-20 minutes walking distance from your home.
The survey must be returned by 31st October.

Classical Music – Matlock

If you like classical music but don’t want to travel to one of our cities, you can enjoy it locally, at Matlock. The new season for Matlock Music starts on Friday 7th October, 7.30pm at Highfields School, with a concert by the outstanding clarinet player Emma Johnson accompanied by Anthony Hewitt. Tickets for this concert are £14, with reductions if you take out membership. Tickets can normally be purchased on the night or in advance at various venues and online.
The programme for the evening includes:
Debussy – Premiere rapsodie, for clarinet and piano (1911)
Schumann – Romanzen for clarinet and piano, op. 94
Weber – Grand Duo Concertant in E flat, Op. 48, for clarinet and piano

60th Horticultural Show: photos and results

Visitors to this year’s 60th Horticultural Show were treated to another fine display of locally grown flowers, fruits and vegetables. Other categories included eggs, cakes, scones, biscuits, pies, quiches, bread, jams, chutneys, canapes and photographs.
The prize-giving ceremony, which was presided over by Nia Linnell, saw Tony Marshall taking home no fewer than five trophies: a remarkable achievement. This was followed by the ever-popular auction of entries, with Robert Bunting doing the duties as auctioneer.
Congratulations are due to all those who won prizes, and thanks are due to all the entrants, to the Horticultural Society for organising the event, and to the judges who kindly lent their expertise.

Parwich Strongest Man 2011 Results

As a number of people have already said, what a great day! Many thanks to Rob, Shaun, Tracy and the many others who organised the event. Although the change of date and venue forced by problems with insurance resulted in fewer competitors than last year, those who stepped up produced a close fought competition.
With old favourites and some new rounds there were ten challengers competing in six events:

Overall Andy Fletcher came first for the second year running, but only just, with Tom Slater just being beaten into second place by 2 points. Steve Lynam and Paul Richmond were joint third, but after a draw on the tiebreak arm wrestling, Steve was given 3rd place on the toss of a coin.

Parwich Strongman Competition: a first glimpse

Congratulations to Andy Fletcher, the winner of this afternoon’s Parwich Strongman Competition. Andy, who hails from Belper, held off a determined challenge from Parwich’s Tom Slater, who was only one point behind him as the competition reached its final round. The two contenders eventually went head-to-head, in a nail-biting race to place an increasingly heavy series of tyres on top of oil drums. Although Tom came within a whisker of victory, Andy was just quick enough to see off his rival, claiming the title for the second consecutive year.
Ten contestants took part in this year’s event, which was the first to be held on the Nethergreen football pitch. The size of the field was perfectly suited to the event, giving spectators ample room to view the action, and allowing the organisers to construct an impressive looking arena. All in all, it was great to see this underused space being pressed into service.
As well as the contest itself, spectators were able to enjoy live music from The A52s, a bar and a barbecue, as well a delicious cake stall, an ice cream van, and Lucy Burlinson’s face painting for the children.
Many thanks to Shaun and Tracy Marshall, Rob Keeling and everyone else who helped to organise the event, and also to all those who generously contributed towards the prizes.

Flower and Vegetable Show – Tomorrow

Don’t forget it is the 60th Horticultural Show tomorrow. Come along and support the event, either by entering a class, by enjoying the exhibition or by buying produce at the auction.
Remember that entries are open at 8am and close at 11am on the morning of the show.
The show opens to the public at approximately 2:00pm
with trophies and prizes to be presented at 3:00pm.
Auction of exhibits will take place after the presentations.

Strongman competition this afternoon

2.30pm – Registration, Bar opens and The A52s are going to play for a half hour or so.
3/3.30pm – BBQ should be ready
3-3.15pm – Event starts. We will run through three events and then have a break for about 45 minutes
Interval – The A52s will play some more.
Then we shall re-commence with last three events.
After the events have finished and winner is announced we will draw the raffle.
The A52s will then play another slot. We have the bar until 8pm.
Event for all to try.
We have a tyre flinging event for the non competing adults and a mini tyre flinging event for the kids.
£1.00 adults and 50p for the under 14’s, each winner will win a prize
Lucy Burlinson will be face painting.

Two losses this week, however, if a team can have a ‘good’ loss then we had one this week!
Tuesday League – 30 August – Away – Hathersage
As said on previous occasions this is a cracking venue. It’s a pity that they have such a good bowls team! They are second in the league and although we gave a good account of ourselves we were beaten by the better side 77 to 64. Even after this loss because other results favoured us we have managed to stay in fifth place in the league. Only one more match to play this season let us hope that we have a good game. We may even sneak into fourth.
Last match 6 September – Home – Whitworth Park
Matlock Thursday Friendly League – 1 Sept – Away – Lafarge (Hope)
Again a nice green, shame about the quarry silos! Although we only won one of the three doubles games we only were behind by 8 points. In the singles we won 4 out of the six singles and won this encounter by seven points. The overall result was therefore 128 to Lafarge and 127 to us. A good loss!
Last match 9 September – Home – Matlock Bath.

Wind Turbine – Noise Assessment

Due to concerns raised about potential noise levels in the village, we conducted a further more extensive assessment which is quite technical but does conclude that noise may only be faintly audible under rare conditions, i.e. downwind at high wind speeds.
We hope to submit a planning application within the next 10 days.
