Villagers should look out for information about the Message in a Bottle scheme: on the blog, at the pub, in the Memorial Hall and via leaflets through your letter box.

This system allows people to keep vital medical information easily available for the emergency services, should they be called out to you.

Jean and Martin (529) will have a supply of these small bottles, which you can then keep in your fridge.

Your First Responders group would also like to say a big “thank you” to all those who have made generous donations to the group over the course of the last year. In many cases, these have been the result of asking for donations to PFR, instead of birthday presents. What a lovely idea! We hope that much delicious cake was still enjoyed!

Drawing underwater: Part Three

Sunday

It was my first dive from a rib today. Slightly apprehensive, but kind words from the skip across from Brownsea made my approach clear.

Chris, a member of the local dive club, had arranged to meet me at Swanage Pier (this place still holds foreboding) at around two-ish, with the aim to head out at two thirty prompt. I arrived early, dumped my kit at the kiosk and parked up the other side of town – giving myself a short walk back to collect my nerves, all of them it seems…

Back to the Pier and I noticed a chap, suited up and sitting in a grey rib eating his sandwiches. It’s Chris. We shout our greetings and I’m introduced to Gary: our skipper for the afternoon and general boat cover. Once togged up, I wade out to join them on the rib, hand over my kit and clamber on (in a very un-ladylike fashion).

Please note that this is a different film to the one that was originally advertised.

Return to the magic and wonder of C.S. Lewis’ beloved world The Chronicles of Narnia – via the fantastic Narnian ship, the Dawn Treader. Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their cousin Eustace, their royal friend King Caspian and a warrior mouse named Reepicheep, find themselves swallowed into a painting and onto the Dawn Treader. Their mission — on which rests the fate of Narnia itself — takes the courageous voyagers to mysterious islands and a river that turns to gold, to fateful confrontations with magical creatures and sinister enemies and to a reunion with their friend and protector, the “Great Lion” Aslan.

One hour and twenty minutes in my wetsuit, hood, gloves and boots, and I am cold. D is very cold.

We made it to the far end of south beach and it was worth it.

Blenny, dragonet, hermits, shore crabs of all sizes, wrasse, snakelock… and I even caught a glimpse of mullet grazing the shallows.

Daffodil Time?

Kevin S writes:

Today’s weather stats confirm what we all know: that the warm autumn continues (despite the fog).  Even so, I was a bit shocked this morning when I saw daffodils coming up in the garden.

Remembering JFS’s photos of apple blossom, primroses and ceanothus from way, way back in October, I decided to list what was happening the garden.  I found:

  • Honeysuckle in flower.
  • A Dorothy Perkins rose putting out new flower buds.
  • A spirea starting to flower.
  • Flowers on the white, summer-flowering jasmine (and on the yellow, winter-flowering jasmine too; no surprise there, though).
  • Masses of flowers on an ornamental strawberry.
  • Campanulas and geraniums in flower.

If it wasn’t for all the worm casts, I’d be tempted to get the lawn mower out.

I was on the phone to a friend in Nottingham yesterday, when she suddenly stopped in mid-sentence because a  peacock butterfly had just flown by.

It would be interesting to hear what other unseasonal sightings people have spotted…?
