January can be a difficult month for many people as the cost of Christmas reflects itself in high bills at a time when money is tight and winter fuel costs are also putting a strain on finances.

If things are beginning to overwhelm you remember Samaritans are available 24 hours a day to give emotional support to anyone in distress or despair or experiencing suicidal feelings. If you would rather talk to someone face to face you can visit our local branch at 110 Burton Rd Derby. This is at the town end of Burton Rd opposite the junction of Burton Rd and Mount Street. We are open to callers most days from 9 am to 3pm and 6pm to 10 pm (no need to make an appointment but please phone before visiting to check that we are open).

We are always seeking new volunteers to train as Samaritans or assist the branch in other ways such as fund raising and admin. We hold ‘no obligation’ information evenings for prospective volunteers every few weeks. If you are interested details are on our website www.samaritans.org/derby

Officers are advising shoppers to be aware of anyone acting suspicious or getting too close to you, or of people who try to distract you by bumping into you. Report them to shop staff as many shops are linked by the shop watch radio scheme.

Please avoid leaving handbags unattended in shopping trolleys, even for just a moment.

Responding to feedback from website users all the information on the planning pages has been re-written to be shorter, avoid jargon and make it easier to understand.

The information – which can be seen here – is now organised into four sections covering:

• pre-application advice and guidance, including answers to frequently asked questions
• making a planning application
• commenting on a planning application, reporting a planning breach or providing feedback about planning services
• information about the planning service, planning policies, enforcement issues, minerals and waste issues and the planning committee.

For the first time residents can also search for details of planning applications and any appeals in one place.

John Herbert, chair of the Peak District National Park Authority’s planning committee, said: “When people need to make or comment on a planning application it’s important they can get information that it is easy to understand and with the least possible hassle.

“That’s what this new website is all about. All our local community residents can now get information at any time of the day or night. They don’t even have to come into Bakewell to do it.”

Public libraries offer free Internet access for people who do not have a computer themselves.

John added: “We’ve already tried the new website out with some residents, and they like it and find it a great help. I hope other residents will try it, and give us their comments or suggestions for further improvements we can make.”

Residents can get pre-application advice in person from a planning duty officer through a free drop-in service run by the Peak District National Park Authority at its Aldern House offices in Baslow Road, Bakewell between 9.15am and 12.45pm on weekdays.

People who use the social media site Twitter can also get regular information about planning and other Peak District National Park Authority-run services. It can be seen by visiting www.twitter.com and following @peakdistrict

Minutes of previous meeting discussed. All tasks for PCSO Cleveley completed.

Priority Profile (Mappleton Community SpeedWatch). To continue (discussed at  Mappleton Parish Council meeting on 19/1/12).
No new Priority Profile at the present time.

Hazard opposite Coach and Horses ph, bush covered in ice during cold weather could be hazard to traffic on the A515. Form 421 to be issued.
Hazard at Spend Lane/Narlows Lane, drain blockage causing flooding. Form 421 to be issued.
Hazard on A515 just above entrance to Ashbourne Heights Caravan Park, possible  blockage on verge causing flooding. Form 421 to be issued.

Sgt Edwards discussed the current crime risks to the area. It was explained that Op Lockerbie was aimed at theft from non-dwellings, theft of metal, lead and copper cable, so there were increased patrols. This was mainly south of Ashbourne, but all areas should be vigilant.
Op Illuminate is the Mobile Police Station selling Crime Prevention items funded by Community Safety Partnership throughout the villages (items available at the Police Station).

Theft of diesel was an issue, and Police warning signs indicating the risks to drivers would possibly be put up at the appropriate places along the A515 Ashbourne to Newhaven stretch.

Op Safedrive was discussed. This was DVLA/VOSA/Police initiative at Hulland and Ashbourne, and it had been a very successful day.

Theft of Land Rovers was a threat, even in daylight hours, this had happened recently at 11am at Sainsbury car park.

The fall in crime was not unfortunately not available until the end of March.

Sgt Edwards was asked about Police numbers and if the 2012 Olympics would have an effect on numbers in Derbyshire. It was stated that at the present time all forces would supply a number of Officers but this would not really impact on the usual resources.
