Main Flower & Vegetable Show Sunday 7th September 2008
The Horticultural Society are particularly grateful to the commitment of the judges. Mr R Hill of Dronfield worked particularly hard this year judging the local flowers as usual, the local vegetables in place of Mrs Hill who was unwell and also jointly the open chrysanthemum classes as the planned judge had to withdraw because of a family commitment. Mr W K Wilkins of Bradley judged the dahlias and jointly with Mr Hill the chrysanthemums. Mrs M Oldfield of Buxton, a former head of catering at M & S judged the home produce section. This was her first year as one of our judges and we hope we will see her again in the future. The organisers were particularly impressed that she noted that she was served an M & S quiche for lunch. Last but not least we would also like to thank Emma of Absolutely Fabulous in Ashbourne for stepping in at the last minute to very professionally judge the floral art.
The Society would also like to give a big thank you to all who worked so hard to make the day a success. As can be seen from the list of trophy winners below Tony and Rita very nearly swept the board.
The prizes were presented by our new Headteacher Caroline Rogers and Denis Laycock very ably acted as auctioneer. The auction made around £120, which will go some of the way towards covering the expenses of the day.

Children’s Horticultural Show Sunday 22nd June 2008
The entries for Parwich School Poster Competition were displayed on Sunday in the Memorial Hall. This year’s theme was ‘a Parwich garden’. The entries were excellent, rivalling the real gardens for colour and profusion. In the 7 yrs and under section first prize went to Lexie L, second to Lauren M and third to Jacob B. In the 8yrs and over section first prize went to Tamara D, second to Georgia G and third to Bertie L. Thank you to the School for supporting this, and to Carolyn, Ruby and Jean for judging it.

The Children’s Show was very well supported, with a most impressive range of entries. The Show tables and drawings as a whole are well worth visiting, with the miniature gardens and animals made out of fruit and vegetables being of an exceptionally high standard. Well done to all who entered. If possible the standard was even higher than last year, perhaps helped by a very wet Saturday, keeping the children indoors. Thank you to Alan for judging the geraniums, which this year were supplied by Wyaston Nursery, and to Rita for judging the rest.
Rita said: “I found the Children’s Show most enjoyable. It was a really hard task picking a winner as everyone had put such a lot of effort and hard work into their entries. I was amazed at the high standard and imagination the children had. To me everyone was a winner! I also would like to thank the Horticultural Society for my flowers; it was a nice surprise and a lovely ending to my day.”

Also a particular thank you to Ann for ensuring the smooth and impartial running of the Show and to Flo for all the recording and tallying of results and points.
A good range of children won prizes in each class, with one outstandingly successful entrant in the 7yrs and under (it is just as well the judge does not know whose entry is which). It was heartening also to see more children entering the 12 to 16yr age group, this year; let’s hope the trend continues.

The trophies were awarded as follows:
Ella Hopkinson Cup
