Archive for July, 2008

This was the response I received when a work colleague asked me what I would be doing this evening. “Oh, I said, just a bit of ferret racing”.

Our traditional Friday Race Night at the Legion was well up to scratch. Local ferret breeders battled to find the finest ferret in the Thoroughbred Ferret Furlong – try saying that 10 times quickly! Local jockeys competed in the Legion Grand National, egged on by their sponsors and punters.

This evening marked the end of a wonderful Wakes week. Most of us are exhausted and need to go now for a bit of a lie down. Never mind lads and lasses….it’ll soon be next years Wakes!

The Ball Race

Deep in the bowels of Carnival Committee Headquarters, fevered brainstorming led to a radical change in location and setup for this year’s ball race. Light, flimsy plastic balls were jettisoned in favour of sturdy tennis balls – Andy Murray no longer needs them! Gone also were the low-tech crates used last year to hold and release the balls. This year’s solution was…….a digger!!!! Never let it be said that the Committee doesn’t think big!

Happy July 4th to our local US citizens (inc. Debbie, Evie and Lynette):

Our latest roving reporter Nia is back by popular request:

Fast on the heels of Children’s sports night comes another nerve testing night for parents. First we have to start carbo loading the evening meal for 4 days beforehand and on the night it is a fine balance of eating the right sort of food (slow energy release….) at least 2hrs before they set off. Try getting an over excited child to eat at 5pm when all they want to do is practise their sprint starts and elbow barges!

There is now a great entry from the infant class with the girls all having `gentleman’s` agreements to run together. The boys have a slightly more win at all costs approach. The junior class have a good idea of each others’ potential and have their eyes firmly on the opposition. With no money but fabulous trophies and shields going to the top 3 local boys and girls there is a lot at stake.

The starting line up was buzzing with excitement. Surely Alexander D must be 17 by now or he has been down the gym a lot as no 14 yr old should be that tall and long legged! Little girls holding hands and swearing to help each other ascend the big hill. An interesting collection of running clothes was on show. The full well turned out runner look was on full show, the `I’ve just got back from school and I’m not changing` look made a real come back and then there were the carefully put together racing princess outfits.

On the word GO the children surged forward, trampling over each other in the rush to get to the front. Worried parents were already questioning their parenting skills as they watched their offspring whiz down the road and head ever upwards as the rain clouds gathered menacingly overhead(more…)

In time for (most of) the Flower Festival and the Dedication Service on Sunday, the new information/display board on the Parwich Tympanum arrived this lunchtime (Friday 4th July).  Made by Caliba of Nottingham it has images of the carved stone before the weathering made it difficult to decipher and an explanation of the animal symbols depicted:

Morning mist from Gibbons Bank

What better way to mark the 500th post on PARWICH.ORG, than with these images of Parwich in the morning mist?

The pictures were taken at around 5:00 this morning by “early bird” Mike G, from his vantage point on Gibbons Bank.

As the sequence progresses, you can see the first rays of morning sunlight creeping across the valley.

By the final image, the mist has started to fade, and you can see the tree tops beginning to poke through. (Best seen if you click to enlarge.)

Thanks to Mike for getting up so early, and capturing a scene that many of us would never normally get to see.

Open Gardens and Flower Festival
Sat 5th & Sun 6th July
11am – 5pm – entry £4

With more than 20 gardens to visit, a flower festival, an art exhibition and a bell ringing competition there is plenty to keep you occupied.  Refreshments are available at the Legion Hall between 11am – 2pm.

Brassington is an attractive old village situated on a south facing hilltop and surrounded by spectacular countryside.  The fine Norman church of St James overlooks the village where there are some lovely old houses and pretty cottages set amongst narrow streets. Once an important centre for lead mining, there are still many remnants of the old industry to be seen in the area.

Parwich Pet Show

Dogs, two ferrets and a cat … this was the line up for this years Pet Show on Thursday. Many people came to the show, bringing along their pets (as well as their musical skills in some cases, entering the ‘best singing dog’ class!). Others came along to watch the fun as the entrants were judged on their carrot eating speed, size, resemblance to owner, whisker length and much more! Overall, everyone had a good time – that includes both pets and owners … roll on next year!

This post is just to say ‘No news yet’.  At the open consultation meeting on the 6th May, the Officers suggested the final draft might be submitted to the July Planning Committee meeting, however the agenda for this meeting has gone on-line today and we are not included.  Do let us know if anyone has had any feedback from the Authority on their letters or comments.

Views from The Hill

The breeze blowing this evening provided a beautifully clear view from The Hill. You could also get a good view of the helicopters which seemed to be practising low level manoevres over the top of the village!

Here are a few photos of this beautiful evening…

Parwich’s Strongest Men!

Fortunately the rain held off for last night’s strongest man competition, which was particularly well attended. This year’s events were different to those from last year; they were definitely not for the fainthearted and included:

  • Farmers walk.
  • Car lift.
  • Hold tight.
  • Rotate on this.
  • Log pull.

The competition was sponsored by Marshall Builders and local plumber Rob Keeling. The events ran smoothly, if not effortlessly on the part of the competitors! Many thanks to Shaun Marshall, Paul Cooper and Rob Keeling, who had clearly put a lot of thought and effort in to the preparation and organisation of the event.

There were nine entrants, many new to the competition, spanning a range of ages and professions. Despite these differences, the thing they all had in common was that they were all ready and willing to take up the five challenges. This year’s competitors (in no particular order) are listed below, along with a group photo taken before the action began:

  • James Staley
  • Carl Alsop
  • Peter Carrington (Posh Pete)
  • Tim Ryder
  • John Etches
  • Robert Bunting
  • Rob Staley
  • Rob Spencer
  • John Hotchin (Hotch)

Spot the mistake

When Roger Graham visited Parwich Church last week to see our fine new stained-glass window, he spotted a mistake.  Has anyone else noticed it?  If not go to the Church (or check out our earlier post) to see if you can.

Fortunately the error does not impair the beauty of the window, and so far Roger is the only person we know of that has spotted it.  We do not know if the window is to remain as it is or have the mistake corrected.

In Islamic art there should always be an imperfection, so as not to rival the perfection of the Divine.

PARWICH.ORG tops the 1000 mark!

Wednesday marked another milestone in the short but eventful history of PARWICH.ORG, as the site received over 1000 page views in a single day.

For a community with only around 500 on its electoral roll, that’s pretty good going!

Those of us on the editorial team always knew that Wakes Week would be a busy time for the blog, but this week’s figures have surpassed our wildest expectations.

Our thanks to everyone who has supported the site, both within the community and beyond it. (We have regular readers as far away as the USA, and we welcome them one and all.)

Lynne at the Red House writes:

On Wakes Saturday evening, Amy (aged 6) lost her “Next” camouflage-coloured hoody – probably somewhere at the fairground.

If anyone happens to have picked it up, I should be very grateful if you would either hand it to anyone at Parwich school to pass onto her, or call me on 474.

OK, so this is a long shot – but does anyone has a vinyl or cassette copy of the album Val Doonican Rocks, But Gently lurking in their attics? Although long since deleted (and unavailable on CD), this album not only topped the charts in early 1968, but it even knocked The Beatles’ classic Sergeant Pepper from the Number One position – proving that you should never underestimate the power of a crooner in a cardigan !

If you do own a copy, then please contact Mike Atkinson at parwich@hotmail.co.uk, as I would very much like to borrow it for a few days, in order to assist a friend’s research for a project.

As an added incentive, I will also make a donation to Project Parwich upon receipt of the album.

‘Lost & Found’

FOUND – 1 Training shoe (right)
Location – Dodds Dill , Monsdale Lane, Parwich
Time – 9.30am 2/7/08.

QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED.

Have we lost a Hill Race competitor?
Is it an SOS?
Where is the other half?
Did he/she hop round on one leg or carry on barefoot (RHS).
Why are lost shoes and socks always single and not in pairs?

Cheers,
Mike G

Ashbourne Telegraph 2nd July 2008

One might be tempted to say that the Ashbourne News Telegraph is on the up with a very good edition this week, that is if it were not for the paupacy of news from Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich and Pikehall.  However here are some features that might interest our readers:

p.1 £1m upgrade for QEGS’ sixth-form facilities at Boothby Meadows announced
p.2 More on the Ashbourne big cat saga, though this time the more grisly news of a foal killed at Kniveton
p.4 Comment section reports a slight drop in accidents on the A515 (perhaps the reduction in the speed limit was not such a bad thing after all).
p. 28 & 29, and 56 Report on the World Toe Wrestling Championship at the Bentley Brook Inn
p. 55 Summer Football results

As always let us know what we have missed.

Hill Run – a visitor’s perspective

Thank you to Mark Ashworth for supplying the following:

We came to Parwich to see Peter and to have a rest – as usual.  We have managed the former, but the latter was disrupted by my (self-inflicted) entry into the Hill Race.  It sounded innocuous enough, but proved quite a challenge for this Veteran (it seems that one becomes a veteran earlier and earlier these days).  The experience has increased my respect for Parwich’s hill, and also for the organisation of this event.  (more…)

The planning application for change of use of the former Parwich Spar Shop is showing as withdrawn on the PDNPA’s (Peak Park) website.

It is interesting to look at the recent application for the change of use of the Cavalier Inn at Grindon to fully residential.  A previous application last year was refused on the grounds that non-viability had not been demonstrated.  The officers again recommended refusal of the current application, though they now agreed non-viability had been demonstrated, on the grounds that alternative community uses have not been investigated.  This application was again refused at the June Planning Committee Meeting.

There was an excellent turn out for the Treasure Hunt.  Unfortunately my mind is still reeling from ‘what colour is the cliffhanger in Creamery Lane’‘registrations over bubbles and shells’ and ‘ABs on level playing fields‘.  I managed one very tasty burger before retreating to recover, so I missed the results.

It was a great evening.  Well done Pippa and Alan for pitching the clues to give all a challenge, but at least ensuring the less observant amongst us (i.e. me) but not fall flat on our faces.  The Legion was packed but the queue for the bar-b-q was certainly the most worthwhile challenge of the evening, next to the queue for the bar that is.

Alan if you don’t mind giving away your trade secrets, we could put the Village Treasure hunt on the Blog. (If anyone, whose brain survived the evening intact, wants to add to this post either add your comments below or email them to parwich@hotmail.co.uk)

The Committee asked us to add a special thanks to Paul Dickinson of Bradbourne for his donation of the burgers and sausages for the Bar-b-q.  Paul can supply burgers, joints, bar-b-q ribs, chops and sausages (including plain pork, mustard, ginger & spring onion, country herb, apple, sage, leek, Irish, tomato and various other flavours).  To find out more about ordering any of these and more contact Paul Dickinson on tel. 01335 390 250.

Many thanks to Nia for the following (I can only second her thanks to the Wakes organisers, who are putting so much work into the smooth running of the Week.  Each year I enjoy Wakes more than the last, how do they do it?):

Finally the weather was on the side of the children as they all gathered on a beautifully prepared race track (well it had been until Sunday evening and then the moles got to work… ). The crowd were in fine vocal form and the children put in final practise sessions and honed their techniques for the wheel barrow and 3 legged races.

As in previous years it was always going to be difficult to spot the winners without TV aided photo finishes, so there were numerous spotters on the final tape to ensure that the first 3 over the line received the all important brown envelope and that everyone else was placated with a sweet. Many of the children had been told that if they wanted to go on the fair they needed to win money to pay for it so there was a lot at stake as the children lined up and waited for Dennis to utter the `GO` word(more…)
