Best wishes for A-level results

PARWICH.ORG would like to take this opportunity to wish the young adults of Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich and Pikehall all the best today.  For many of you your entire school career has been aimed at today’s A-level results.  We hope you have got the grades you need to achieve your chosen goals, be it Derby, Leeds or further afield.

We can justifiably feel proud of our young people.  It is infuriating this talk of exams getting easier.  They are different and today you have to work much harder, than in our day.  Fortunately they are also less of a lottery and hard work is more reliably rewarded.  Do let us know how you have got on and where you plan to go next.

As always let us know if I have missed any local mentions.

Don’t forget the deadline for your comments on the amended plans for the proposed new Memorial Hall is 5pm today.  You can email your comments to planning.service@peakdistrict.gov.uk.  The Planning Officers will be presenting a supplementary report with new recommendations, taking into account the amended plans and the additional comments to the Planning Committee.  The application will be heard at Friday’s Planning Committee meeting which is being held at the Bakewell Agricultural Centre.

The deadline for indicating your intention to speak at the meeting was noon today, and some seven individuals/groups have asked to speak, five for and two against.  The public can attend, so go along and let the Planning Committee know that Alsop, Ballidon, Parwich and Pikehall care about the future of our community hall facilities.  If you want a lift or can offer someone else a lift, email parwich@hotmail.co.uk or phone Jane on 665.

Weather explanation

In case anyone else was as dismayed as I was this morning to see the brisk little torrents once again running through the village, you will be encouraged to read that according to the Yahoo newspage,

… the reason we have got so much rain is a band moving north-east.”

Singing in the rain, no doubt … (sorry!)

Why not enjoy a day out to Worcester Cathedral & Witley Court?  This trip is being organised by the churches of Parwich, Alsop, Fenny Bentley, Thorpe & Tissington on Saturday 6th September.

The coach trip to Worcester will be £8 for adults and £5 for children.  Entrance into Witley Court is £5.50 for adults and £4.40 for concessions & £2.80 for children.  A family ticket is £13.80.  English Heritage members-free.

We will attend choral evensong at 5.30pm before returning home.

Please sign the form in the Church or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk by Sunday 17th August if you wish to come on the trip.

A hundred years ago, Witley Court was one of England’s great country houses, hosting many extravagant parties. Today it is a spectacular ruin, the result of a disastrous fire in 1937. Restoration work to the West Wing has made several new rooms accessible to the public.

The vast and rambling remains of the palatial 19th-century mansion are surrounded by magnificent landscaped gardens. Attached to Witley Court is Great Witley Church, which has an amazing Italianate Baroque interior (not managed by English Heritage). The church has a tearoom just 100 metres away serving morning coffee, light lunches and afternoon tea.

Thank you to our reader who sent in this photo of a hanging basket that was not entered in the competition.  Hopefully they will enter next year.

Also although the baskets at the Sycamore Inn could not be included in the competition as they had been planted up by the judge, they are well worth seeing, so here is some photos of them as well:

Please note the new date – Saturday 6th September, just before the children go back to school.  This event is run on a similar line to the Garden Open day but instead of looking at gardens, visitors will hopefully buy all your excess furniture, antiques and bric a brac that you put out at your garden gate.  You can have just a table top or a gazebo – or two or three if you have lots of stuff. A numbered map will be sold to vistors for a token fee who will then walk around the village finding the numbers and all your unwanted treasures.

How does one search for a diamond??

History Society walk postponed

The History Society’s walk up the Ringway and along Cardlemere Lane that should have taken place next Wednesday (13th August) has been postponed.  Perhaps we are fated never to have this walk as last time it was attempted we gave up because of driving rain.  There was so much water running down the Dale road that it was more like a stream.

No new date has yet been set.

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for the following:

This year we revived our Hanging Basket Competition, which fell into abeyance some years ago. This was prompted by the donation of a Trophy to the Society in memory of the late Abel Shipley. Abel was born in 1915 at Warslow, but his family moved to The Croft in Parwich when he was three months old. He lived in Parwich the rest of his life, and retained an impressive memory of village affairs right up to his death. Many will have very fond memories of Abel.

As a child Abel worked on the family allotment behind their house, now gone unfortunately, and “every fortnight my mother walked me, aged 5, over to Warslow to clean and wash for my grandfather and uncle and then walk back again. This took us through Alsop, Gypsy Bank and Beresford Dale. (more…)

Peak Park planning officers are currently recommending refusal of the demolition and rebuild plans for the new Memorial Hall when it goes before the Planning Committee next Friday.  However, the situation is not irreversible and there is room for manoeuvring.

These are their reasons for refusal:

1. The proposed development would not be of an appropriate design, materials or scale for its location.

2. The proposed development would fail to preserve or otherwise enhance the setting of a designated Conservation Area.

3. The proposed development would result in an unacceptable adverse impact on the residential amenities of neighbouring properties.

4. Inadequate provision of parking spaces would compromise the safety of other highway users, result in harm to the amenity of the local area and put users with mobility difficulties at a relative disadvantage.

Click here to read the full 17 page document in printer-friendly PDF format.

Having just spoken to Chris Fridlington, the Planning Officer dealing with the application, he states that the above report was written before they received the amended version and since receiving this amended application subject to minor amendments, issues 1 & 2 could be resolved.  He also states that there are a number of ways in which issues 3 & 4 may also be resolved, so that the Planning Officers can change their recommendation to one of approval for next Friday’s Planning Committee Meeting.

What we can do.

1. Even if you have already done so please write in again to Peak Park – all comments must be received by Wednesday 13th August.  Email comments to planning.service@peakdistrict.gov.uk quote NP/DDD/0608/0546

2. Attend the planning committee meeting next Friday at The Conference Centre, Bakewell Agricultural Centre at 10am.  (Click here for a map.)

There are people going who have spaces in their car, so if you are going or need a lift please email parwich@hotmail.com or ring Jane on 665.  The physical presence of large numbers of our village (including children) will help to show planners the support for this project.

Remember that without planning permission there is NO CHANCE of Big Lottery funding, and therefore NO MONEY.  If planning permission is refused, then certain alterations to the existing building would still be required by law.  These alterations would still require approval from Peak Park planning officers, who have already indicated that they would request some substantial cosmetic changes.  Without the support of Lottery funding, where would the money come from?

Thank you to Peter Trewhitt for supplying the following.  This post has been up-dated 14th August in the light of Sue Adam’s comment below.  The Environment Sub-Group of Parwich Village Action Group has had a response to our letter commenting on the draft Conservation Area Appraisal (see our earlier post ‘A living working community’).

The response consisted of three documents:

The letter focused on three main issues; the purpose of the Conservation Area Appraisal, which is “to define and analyse the specific historic character and appearance that justified the designation of the area“; the Consultation Process that has been followed, that the Officers feel is in line with English Heritage guidelines, is appropriate and cost effective; and the Conservation Area Boundary which the Officers recommend be unchanged.   (more…)

Tympanum leaflets in Church

The printing for the Tympanum Project arrived at St. Peter’s Church in Parwich today.  Following the dedication of the replica tympanum, this completes the Project, as all the Heritage Lottery Fund paperwork is now completed.

There are leaflets in the Church for people to take away.  They contain a brief history of the carved stone focusing on the evidence for dating it, complementing the interpretation of the symbols on the display board.

There is also a reference booklet that can be seen in the Church or downloaded as a pdf via the Church website.  The downloads are available in two formats, firstly the complete illustrated version (this may take a couple of minutes to download) and secondly a text-only version to print out.  This has the full background information on: the arrival of Christianity in our area; how reglious stone carving developed locally in the centuries leading up to the Norman Conquest; the history of our tympanum; and details of related carved stones in other local churches.

An aerial view!!

Thank you to Colin B for sending in this blog.

I read with interest Mike A’s recommendation for his new aerial. The picture on Mike’s TV screen may have improved, but the picture from our window certainly hasn’t !!! Without wanting to initiate a neighbourly dispute, I attach a photo of the aforementioned aerial taken this morning from our garden.

No aerial, certainly including mine, could be said to be a thing of beauty but this one being both larger and a couple of metres higher than those on the adjoining houses does rather catch the eye. The passage of time and soot from the chimney will, I am sure lessen the impact of this installation. I have been receiving digital TV for at least 4 years with a smaller aerial pointing in a different direction, albeit from a higher elevation.

I find it rather ironic that I believe is is possible to erect such a thing without any sort of permission, yet to mount a discrete, black, round, binlid-sized piece of space age technology requires planning permission for those of us in listed buildings in conservation areas. I have heard that this permission has been previously refused. I understand that the new ‘freesat’ service achieves or shortly will achieve much better reception and more channels on digital TV than even the largest aerial in our locality.

Grants promoting local democracy

Thank you to Chris E. for forwarding the following grant opportunity.  Is it something that local groups could consider (e.g. The Memorial Hall for its work in developing the new Hall plans out of lextensive local consultation; the Village Action Group, perhaps to strengthen aspects of the Village Plan; or even the Parish Council to explore use of PARWICH.ORG to increase local involvement)?

Grants for new ideas to get people involved in democracy

Fresh ideas for encouraging people to become involved in democracy will be rewarded with grants under a £150,000 government scheme aimed at charities, community groups and non-government organisations. The Innovation Fund, launched by the Ministry of Justice, will support projects developing new ways to help people participate in public discussions and influence government policy. Grants of up to £15,000 will be available for up to 10 of the best proposals for using online tools, face-to-face events or a combination of approaches. Previous winners have included Speakers’ Corner Trust, which established a speakers’ corner and held a day of debate in Nottingham, and the English Secondary Students’ Association, which developed a training programme and supporting materials to help young people aged 11-19 learn how to campaign on issues important to them.

Applications close on 26 September 2008. Decisions will be announced in October 2008.  For more details see http://www.buildingdemocracy.co.uk/

This was circulated by Paul Dixon, Regional Network Officer, ACRE, http://www.acre.org.uk/events_index.html

The planning application for the proposed new Memorial Hall should be considered by the Planning Committee on Friday 15th August.  Details of the Planning Officers’ report and the agenda for this meeting should be available about a week in advance at the Peak District National Park Authority website, though there appears to be some confusion in that Members of the Authority have been told that it is to be decided on delegated authority by the Officers, and the Authority’s Democratic Services says it is to go to Committee.

Following submission of the planning application, discussion with local people and with the Planning Service has resulted in some modifications to the external appearance of the proposed new Memorial Hall.  For full details go to our page Proposed Plans for the new Memorial Hall, however here are the new drawings that were submitted to the Authority on 30/7/08 (click on the images to enlarge them):

Digital aerials: a recommendation.

Martin Wallis provided an excellent service for us last week, succeeding in providing digital TV access where we had been told there was none.  Ours was a complex set-up to resolve, but Martin coped with the numerous hurdles with tenacity and good humour, all at a most reasonable price.

Martin can be reached on (01335) 344271 or 0791 206 6271.  Estimates are free.

Welcome to Esther!

For those of you who’ve not met her yet, we have a new person in the village – Esther Tyson. Esther moved to Parwich, from Wales, at the end of April and is staying at The Catlow.

She brings even more artistic talent into the village and could appear on your door-step at any moment if you have a garden that looks as if it might contain frogs or toads!

Having being practising artistry since childhood, Esther has been working as a professional artist for the last five years, since graduating. Here are a few examples of her work…

Despite some heavy rain earlier in the day, the Pikehall Y-Not festival got off to a dry and bright start yesterday. Although technical problems delayed the opening of the main stage, the large acoustic tent proved to be an ideal venue to house the Friday afternoon/evening line-up. The bands alternated on stage with the scheduled acoustic artists, with an impressively quick turnaround time between each act.

Our small but enthusiastic Parwich posse witnessed a great set of performances from The Moutown Project, Anthea Neads, Esteban, comedian Ruth Cockburn, The Rusticles, Toufique Ali and our clear favourites: the splendid Whiskycats from Manchester.

As the evening sunshine poured into the tent and the crowd thrashed around wildly to an unknown, unsigned band who were clearly loving every minute, the underlying purpose of the festival – to promote undiscovered talent in a relaxed environment, surrounded by beautiful countryside – became gloriously apparent.
