Meet The A52s!

If you took a Tuesday evening stroll along Smithy Lane this Summer, you may have heard the sound of clinking beer bottles, manic strumming, improvised accordions and uncontrollable laughter. This, ladies and gentlemen, was the sound of The A52s creating music. In the first week, the band learned some notes. In the second week, they tried putting them in the right order. As the weeks went by, these top musicians learned enough notes to do a debut gig! Terrifying huh?! We think so too!

The band turned down frantic offers from lesser venues such as the NEC and the O2 Arena, opting instead for the prestigious yet intimate Parwich Legion. The band will appear 8.30 to 9ish on Saturday 8th November. Make a note in your diaries for an evening of fine entertainment. Free admission (in fact, the band may be paying you)!

The A52s is Parwich’s foremost folk-rock band, comprising 4 musicians at the top of their game (which happens to be Snap):

Healthy Eating Week

This week Parwich Primary School is holding a Healthy Eating Week.  Perhaps the School will be able to add some comments to this post or email ideas to parwich@hotmail.co.uk to help the rest of the community.  Also all you ‘non-school children’ out there might have ideas on how we can all eat more healthily.

(If you fancy a go at growing your own vegetables, seeds can be bought at discount rates through Parwich & District Horticultural Society; the Suttons Seeds catalogues will be given out at the Society’s up coming AGM or contact Mike Hart on tel. 456.)

Although technically not in our area, Hoe Grange Farm is only a matter of yards beyond the Ballidon parish boundary.  Hoe Grange Holidays based at the farm, recently won two East England Enjoy Excellence Awards from East Midlands Tourism:

  • Access for All – Bronze
  • Website – Bronze

Of general interest is their website’s useful Local Events page, listing a good range of Peak District events, though unfortunately they do not link on to the relevant event websites.  Gold award winners in Derbyshire include Kedleston Hall (best Large Visitor Attraction), Buxton Festival (best Tourism Experience) and East Lodge Hotel at Rowsley (best Small Hotel).

Note.  Also we have a new holiday let in our area, The Roost in Parwich. (See the holiday cottage links in the righthand column on most pages.)

Derby Quad

I was up dating the parwich film pages here at PARWICH.ORG and noticed that the cinema at the new Quad centre in Derby is up and running.  This is the awaited replacement for the much loved old Metro Cinema.  Those who have already been do let us know how you have found it, or give us your thoughts on the other cinemas in driving distance.

More Democracy in National Parks

The response to our first on-line poll at PARWICH.ORG is heartening.  So far 37 people have responded of whom:

  • 30% don’t know if our views as residents are taken into account by our National Park Authority, and 62% believe they are not.
  • 87% believe there should be some direct elections to the National Park Authority Board.

We will forward the results to Defra in response to their consultation on this, so see what others think and continue to have your say by clicking here, the more people who contribute the more they have to listen.

Many thanks to Chris E for pointing out the following:

Gordon Brown had asked Matthew Taylor MP to carry out review looking at how land use and planning can better support rural business and deliver affordable housing.  The full report can be seen at the Communities & Local Government website.

Its recommendations include

  • a community led affordable housing initiative;
  • a trialling of new planning policy in one or more National Parks to limit the increase in second homes;
  • new planning policy which accepts that all forms of business can be appropriate in the countryside;
  • planning policy should have a flexible approach to home based work spaces.

The government has yet to respond.  It would seem that what we have been attempting to achieve in Parwich is ahead of Government policy.  Are there opportunities here for our communities; is it possible that we can persuade the Government to support directly local projects as examples of good practice?

Smoothly into first position

The judges’ points put Tom’s American Smooth on this evening’s Strictly Come Dancing in joint first postion, impressive considering it is part of his Stag Do, and he must travel up to Derbyshire in the early hours of Sunday morning. This is only half the final score. Find out the results on Sunday at 8-10pm on BBC 1.

This afternoon’s meeting with Justine Ball, our grants officer for the Big Lottery Fund, was very positive. She met with several of the Project Team: Mike Gerard-Pearse, Brian Beasley, Val Stevenson, Nick Stevenson and Peter Trewhitt. First she looked round the Memorial Hall and the site, and then we moved to the School to access their internet and projection facilities.

We discussed the consultation process, the additional future uses of the Hall that have been identified (e.g. after-school activities and adult education classes) and our strategies to obtain matched funding / in kind donations. Some additional detail was required and several of our outcome measures need rewording to fit into their format, but overall Justine was very complimentary of high standard and thoroughness of our application.  (more…)

It Takes Two

Tonight’s ‘It Takes Two‘ on BBC2 kicked of with the story of Tom and Clare’s romance, in the build up to Saturday’s competition and to Tom and Clare’s wedding.   Best wishes to both Tom and Clare from all at PARWICH.ORG.

The highlight of this for me has to be Stuart yodeling; it left Tom with a tear in his eye.

The Bishop of Patna, the Rt. Rev’d Philip Marandih, has long been trying to get me to visit his diocese.   So when the director of schools for Derby Diocese suggested that I join a trip to India, designed to set up and develop links between schools in Derbyshire and in India, including Patna diocese, I readily accepted her invitation.  A few days ago I returned from a tour which took me through the flooded areas of Bihar state, one of the poorest parts of India, to some tribal villages which have been left virtually untouched by India’s recent economic growth.

Christianity was first brought to these peoples – the Santali tribe – in the 1860s, and the first church was built there, in the village of Taljhari, at about the same  time as St. Peter’s church in Parwich was being rebuilt.  Fenny Bentley school is making links with two schools in this area, one in the tribal village of Barharwa, where it costs only £800 to build a new classroom, and one in the city of Patna, where email links are likely to be better.  My tasks during the visit included speaking and preaching on several occasions, and giving three talks to a conference on the Church’s engagement in society in another tribal area, this time in the diocese of Eastern Himalaya.

This is a video clip of the welcome shown to us by the Santali tribespeople of Barharwa –

Other video clips of the visit, and of my visit to Assam earlier this year, may be seen here.

Many congratulations to Esther Tyson, our recent artist addition to the village (see previous post).

She has won not one but two(!) prestigious awards for her art work, which are:

The RSPB Award for “Bullfinch Study” and the Capmark Europe Art Award (first prize) for “Early beginnings – Moorhen nest building”.

Interestingly, the Moorhen picture (see below) was based on Esther’s studies of the Parwich village pond.

Both awards were presented by Germaine Greer at the Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition 2008 at the Mall Galleries, London on the 23rd September (see photo below).

Order magazines at the Sycamore

Janet asked us to let people know that they can order their magazines via the Shop at the Sycamore.  Either call in or phone Janet on 390 212.

Also last Saturday the Pub was featured in the Derby Evening Telegraph referring back to its winning the Best Community Pub Award in September:

Another Derbyshire pub which has stayed successful despite the trade crisis is the Sycamore Inn, in Parwich.  It scooped two gongs at this year’s Great British Pub Awards, for East and West Midlands Pub of the Year and Community Pub of the Year.

Janet Gosling, who has run the pub for eight years, said the business had stayed central to the village community.  In March, she and her partner, Stephen Conway, opened a shop in the pub, selling vegetables, newspapers and household goods.  (more…)

Vicar to move to Nottingham

It is with much sadness that I have announced that we will be moving from Parwich in February – I have been asked to be priest in charge of three churches in the centre of Nottingham.

St. Mary’s is situated in the Lace Market; St. Peter’s is in the heart of the shopping area, next to Marks and Spencer’s, and All Saints is near to the Arboretum and to Trent University.  Our years in Parwich have been wonderful in so many ways, but working in the heart of a major city will also offer some splendid opportunities.

I expect that we will leave Parwich in early February – my licensing service in Nottingham is on Sunday 22nd February at 3.00 pm.   The process of finding a new vicar for Parwich will involve the drawing up of a profile of the group of five parishes, which will be put to possible applicants.  This will be overseen by the bishop and his colleagues, but the main work on the profile needs to be done here.

At least it’s not too far from here – do come and visit!   Details of the parish are at www.nottinghamchurches.org
