Problems with your water?

Owing to a burst at Knockerdown, water supplies to Parwich have been temporarily cut off.

Severn Trent Water tell us that they are working on the problem as a matter of priority, and that they hope to resume normal services “within the next couple of hours”.

(We called them at 16:15, so that would make for an estimate of 18:15.)

The 24 hour emergency contact number for Severn Trent Water is 0800 783 4444.

Update – 17:30: The water supply appears to have returned, but still at a low pressure.

Update – 18:00: Everything seems normal again.

From Salsa to Tango

This week on Strictly Come Dancing Tom and Camilla are dancing the Tango. The programme starts at 6-20pm this evening with everyone welcome to come and watch it on the big screen at the Sycamore Inn.

The phone lines are open from approximately 7-25 to 9pm. It does not look like John Sergeant’s withdrawal from the series will effect how the competition is structured, though the Strictly website reports he and Kristina will be performing a farewell waltz on tonight’s show.

According to the bookies, Tom and Camilla are now second favourites to win the contest, just behind Austin Healey and Erin Boag.

Ringmaster – Text Scam

Beware of a scam involving texts saying you have a parcel awaiting delivery!

Warrington Trading Standards have recently informed Nottinghamshire Police of a current scam doing the rounds – please be aware. Warrington Trading Standards have contacted Phonepay Plus following complaints about text messages consisting of the text “!! URGENT!! Large parcel awaiting delivery, please call now on +23222270680 for delivery tomorrow INTERNATIONAL PARCEL DELIVERIES”

Calls to the number will be charged at £1.50 per minute. The message is 6 minutes long. Phonepay plus advise that they have contacted the networks in order that they bar access. Please do not contact Phonepay plus as they are aware of the scam which appears to be connected to Sierra Leone. It may take 24 hours to block the number.

Re-launch of Local History Society periodical

Parwich & District Local History Society’s last Newsletter came out in February 2007, however they are now re-launching it in a new guise as their News Quarterly.  (It should be born in mind that a local history society’s idea of news, might not be as current as the more general reader’s, for example the last Newsletter reported that readers had missed the deadline to object to a proposed new road through Parwich, by only 197 years.)

All the Society’s members are being contacted to establish whether they want to continue to recieve mailings in the time honoured paper form, or whether they want to go electronic.

The News Quarterly will also be on-line at the Society’s website.  The first two issues, now on-line, are accessible to all.  Once the Society’s members have indicated how they want to receive their mail shots, future issues of the News Quarterly will be accessible to the members only for the first year following publication, after which they will be released for full public consumption.

Fingers Crossed for the Big Lottery Fund Grant

The count down for the decision by the Big Lottery Fund on our grant application is on.

fingers-crossedThe BLF are to consider the Community Buildings Programme applications on Tuesday the 25th November. Though the grants committee have leeway to delay making the decision up to early next year, it is their intention to make the final decision that day. So we should know next week if we have the grant.

 

The next Memorial Hall Management Committee Meeting is on the evening of the 25th Nov.

  • p.9 Longcliffe Quarries are given planning permission for their new head quarters at Curzon Lodge in Longcliffe, relocating from their existing site at Brassington Moor Quarry.
  • p.54 Ashbourne Town Darts.  The report gives a sumary of reults and current league table positions.  It has been a good week for Parwich with the following results: Nag’s Head 2 – 7 Parwich Legion; Sycamore 5 – 4 The Bullets; and Parwich Legion A 5 – 4 The Shepherds.  The League meeting is at 8-30pm Thursday 27th Nov at Compton Social Club.

Vicar featured in Nottingham paper

Yesterday the Nottingham Evening Post ran a fascinating feature on Rev Christopher Harrison, who is moving from the parishes of Aslop, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Thorpe and Tissington to Central Nottingham.

Christopher HarrisonUnder the title “Thatcher and drugs and rural Derbyshire – Nottingham’s new vicar tells his story” here are some extracts:

For Christopher, 51, is on the cusp of taking up a new challenge as the vicar of three of Nottingham’s most prestigious city centre churches, All Saints, St Mary’s and St Peter’s.

“The three Nottingham churches have a traditional liturgy but they are quite modern in outlook and there’s a lot of engagement with the community,” he said.

He believes his disparate experiences of the tough and the talkative, from council estates to parish council meetings, will stand him in good stead for his Nottingham career.  (more…)

Police Ringmaster – Missing youth

Derbyshire Constabulary are concerned for a missing person called Martin Mangan, who may be in the Ashbourne/Derby area.

He is a white male, aged 14 years, 6ft tall, slim build, short brown hair. He is wearing a blue top, cream jacket, dirty jeans and black boots. For those living in rural areas, please check outbuildings for evidence of anyone sleeping rough. Please report any sightings of Martin to the police on 0845 164 1644, quoting Incident no: 876 of 16/11/08.

End of a Retail Era

Yesterday saw the last visit of Andrew Peach with the butcher’s van to Parwich and the area.  The firm of Peach’s of Ashbourne has been selling meat from a van in the village for at least three generations of Peaches and over three generations of villagers.

There has been a decline in the number of firms bringing vans out to the villages over the years, and increasingly Andrew Peach has found it had to staff the shop and go out on the van.  It was with obvious regret that he felt obliged to stop the service, which has been much appreciated by those who have used it over the years.

All that remains of the mobile shop services is Morris & Son’s fish van on a Friday

Tom and Camilla’s salsa: the hips don’t lie!

Another fine performance this week saw Tom and Camilla picking up 35 points from the Strictly judges, leaving them in third position behind Austin & Erin (38) and Rachel & Vincent (39).

“Those sequins, they set your hips in motion!” – Arlene.

“There are three things you need in salsa: rhythm, rhythm, rhythm. You had that; you were fantastic.” – Len.

“The Spice Boy has risen to the challenge yet again!” – Bruno.

“Very well executed. Boundless energy. However, I have one small point to make…” – Craig.

Sadly, for reasons of space, PARWICH.ORG is unable to bring you Craig’s “one small point”…

Update: We are happy to report that Tom and Camilla have made it through to next week’s show.

Strictly Come Dancing: it’s Salsa week for Tom.

Vote for TomThis week’s Strictly Come Dancing starts at 18:05 – and as usual, The Sycamore will be screening the show on their jumbo-sized screen. Voting commences at 19:20, and the lines will remain open until around 21:00.

Tom had a bit of trouble with a stiff neck earlier in the week – but a visit to the physiotherapist has cleared the problem, and we can expect to see him and Camilla dancing a sizzling Salsa on tonight’s show.

Although the couple have been sailing through the competition thus far, picking up deservedly high scores from the judges every single week, last week’s shock result for Rachel Stevens – placing her in the bottom two on Sunday night, despite being one of the most capable dancers in this year’s contest – demonstrated that nobody is safe. (Apart from John Sergeant, obviously.) So please don’t forget to vote!

Monday – The next Community Forum

Derbyshire Police want to meet and listen to the local Communities and their Derbyshire Police want to meet and listen to the local Communities and their Representatives, so we can find out what concerns the local people. Along with other Agencies we can then deal with those concerns and continue to improve the quality of life across our area.

Whilst we try to speak with Parish Councillors, Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators, local Schools, and members of the public, this tends to be done with the individual groups. We want to try and get people from different groups, and the general public, to meet together, to discuss concerns, and then work together to resolve any problems. The aim is to try and do this by having Community Forums, one on each Beat.

This is a further opportunity to influence how your area is policed, and to share ideas with other parties, including people from other villages within the Beat. Other Agencies will be involved, such as the County Council, District Council, Peak Park and Fire and Ambulance Services.

As I have explained before our area has been ‘christened’ the Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Team. Let me stress that it is purely because Tissington is in the centre of our area, which includes Mappleton, Thorpe, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Bradbourne, Ballidon, Kniveton, Alsop en le Dale, and towards Pikehall.
We are hoping to have Simon TRANTER, Derbyshire County Council Traffic & Safety Manager for our area, attending.

Our area is widespread and I understand that some concerns to residents of Mappleton may have no relevance to those at Alsop en le Dale. However it may well be one village can learn from another’s experience, and we can all benefit by getting together.

Memorial Hall Architect wins 3 Awards

Two buildings designed by Marsh:Grochowski, the architects who are also designing our new Memorial Hall, have won three of this year’s regional awards presented by the Royal British Institute of Architects, East Midlands, in association with Ibstock Brick and the East Midlands Development Agency.  Our architects’ environmental achievements on these two buildings was stressed.  RIBA’s Regional Chairman said:

There is a strong emphasis on sustainability in the awards, with architects choosing materials sympathetic to their setting and the wider environment.
