Parwich School fund raise for Children in Need

Parwich School Council hope to support Children in Need by collecting your 1p and 2p coins, to create a trail around the school building from the front door around the building and back again.
There are over a billion 1p and 2p coins currently in circulation in the UK. Not all of these are in the catchment area for Parwich Primary School but how about getting most of those that are to the School for Friday 14th November.

Rocking for Remembrance

This evening the A52s burst upon the Parwich music scene with a sophisticatedly raw blend of rock, folk and almost anything else you could think of … The Legion Hall was probably way above its audience limit for this new sound whose edge was so cutting you could hear it through much of the village – as you can see below –

Tom in joint first

Tom & Camilla’s Quickstep has taken them into joint first on the judges’ scores, along with Cherie & James and Rachel & Vincent. However that is only half the score.
The results show is on Sunday at 8-15pm on BBC1.
Horticultural Society has new officers

At last night’s Parwich & District Horticultural Society’s AGM the following Officers were elected unopposed:
- Chair: Nia Linnell
- Vice Chair: vacant
- Treasurer: Ben Bennett
- Secretary: Mike Hart
Peter Rawlins stood down from the Committee, to the thanks of the Society for his long service and hopes to be able to continue to draw on his expertise and knowledge.
The Society also elected two new Committee Members and Ben Bennett as our Memorial Hall Representative. Outgoing Chair Peter Trewhitt thanked everyone for all the support he and the Society have received over the past year. He continues as a committee member.
The Society enthusiastically committed to an active role in Parwich Primary School’s ‘Growing Together‘ project. Anyone wanting to volunteer to support developing a productive vegetable garden at the School please contact Nia L, Helen P or Rebeca J.
Tom Quicksteps round injury

In this week’ Strictly Come Dancing, Tom and Camilla are dancing the Quickstep. The show starts at 6pm (Saturday 8th Nov) with Tom up first. The voting lines open after the dancing is completed at approximately 7-20pm. You can vote from then to 9pm this evening.
The Sycamore Inn will be open by 6pm this evening so that all who want can watch the programme on the ‘big telly’.

Police warn of ‘false legacy’ scam

Police are warning people about a scam where victims are urged to hand over their bank account details.
A woman living in Tideswell contacted police when she received a letter saying a relative of hers had died in Spain and that she was entitled to some of the relative’s money.
The letter asked her to disclose her bank account details so the money could be transferred.
The lady was immediately suspicious as she does not have any relatives in Spain.
We are concerned that some people may be duped by this scam and we would urge anyone who receives letters or emails of this nature asking for bank details to ignore them.

The Dovedale Dash

Sunday saw the annual madness which is the Dovedale Dash. 1200 runners from all over the world, descend on Dovedale for a 5 mile run over hill and down dale (and through the river).
It was also the 44th consecutive occasion that Clive Russell has competed, and although he didn’t match his win in the veterans section last year, he was runner up. A truly amazing achievement.
He was joined by a gaggle of Linnel’s, a Drummond, a couple of Amos’s to name but a few.
I sadly was consigned to my sick bed with a bad case of Chinese bird flu (is there any other kind?) and couldn’t even spectate.
Well done Clive!

Gunpowder, Treason and Plot

Tradition has it that after Guy Fawkes was captured and the Roman Catholic Gunpowder Plot failed in 1605, one of his fellow conspirators hid from King James’ men here at Manor Farm in Alsop en le Dale.
This is perhaps a little surprising as some fifty years earlier the Alsop family (lords of the manor) were active Protestants, sheltering a radical Protestant cleric from Queen Mary’s men next door at the Hall.
Guy Fawkes’ failure to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James has been celebrated with bonfires on the 5th of November ever since. If you know any more about the identity of the 1605 conspirator at Manor Farm and local links to the original Plot, or about associated local customs, or take any photographs of tonight’s celebrations do send them to parwich@hotmail.co.uk.
Starting school next year?

Are you going to start school next year? Then check your parents have applied for your place? You can state preferences for up to three schools, though your choice can not be guaranteed. Do contact your prefered school (which obviously will be Parwich Primary School) if you have not already done so, but you also need to contact the County Council.
Application to Derbyshire County Council for infant/primary school places for children born between 1st September 2004 and 31st August 2005 need to be in by 3-30pm Friday 12th December. Phone 08456 058058 for an admissions pack or apply on-line.
Derbyshire Ringmaster – burglary in Ashbourne Area

Police in the Derbyshire Dales would like to bring to the attention of householders in the Ashbourne area that in recent weeks there has been an increase in burglary of houses where car keys are targeted resulting in the theft of a vehicle from outside an address. With three offences in the last month, this is only a slight increase, but householders are reminded to safeguard keys to motor vehicles, do not leave them near to insecure doors and where possible ensure that car / house keys are kept away from doors when locked – to ensure that people cannot reach through and open locks etc. Please report all suspicious activity to the Police.

Growing Together in Parwich

Parwich Primary School recently submitted a bid to provide funding that would enable them to improve our school grounds in a sustainable ‘green’ project.
Congratulations to the School; they have been awarded £7000, which along with the Morrisons’ ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers (you can still leave any vouchers at the School) and the support of the local Park Rangers means they can begin to develop areas around school.
They have a plan, but now need volunteers to help make this a reality. If you or anyone within our community would like to be part of this project, please hand your name and contact details in to Mrs Rodgers (headteacher@parwich.derbyshire.sch.uk) at the School. The idea is that staff, children, parents and our community will work together.
Also, the Parwich & District Horticultural Society will be discussing how they can support this project at their AGM on Friday. So, members of the Society: have a think for Friday on how you help.

Challenge to Carsington wind farm

The Peak District National Park Authority and Derbyshire Dales District Council are considering mounting a High Court challenge to the Planning Inspector’s decision to grant permission for the commercial wind farm at Carsington Pastures.
If you have any thoughts on this issue you need to contact the Peak Park Authority by Thursday or Derbyshire Dales District Council before 26th of this month. Alternatively you can give vent as a comment below.

Thank you to Gareth Butterfield of the Ashbourne News Telegraph for letting us know that Derbyshire Dales District Council and the Peak Park Authority had already lodged a joint appeal with the High Court on 28th October against the Planning Inspector’s decision to allow the planning appeal for a commercial wind farm on Carsington Pastures.
Gareth said “It was a really funny conversation when we rang them about it on Monday. They sounded incredibly sheepish and didn’t want to give anything away.” (more…)
Peak Park Chair to visit Parwich

PARWICH.ORG would like to commend the Peak District National Park Authority and its Chair Narendra Bajaria on their series of visits to villages in the Park. We feel it is a very real attempt to develop their understanding of the needs of residents and our communities.
Narendra Bajaria and senior Officer(s) are to visit Parwich on Tuesday 13th January. On the day they will visit various local facilities and meet members of the community. Anyone from Parwich interested in meeting senior leaders of the Peak District National Park Authority during these events can contact John Fern, head of communications, on 01629 816356 or email john.fern@peakdistrict.gov.uk.
The Authority has previously indicated where possible neighbouring hamlets will be included in village visits, so it would be worth Alsop, Ballidon and Pikehall contacting the Authority to see if they are likely to be on any future list or if they should participate in this visit. Next Parwich Parish Council Meeting

Parwich Parish Council meets some 11 times a year, normally on the first Thursday of each month (except December). This includes the annual Open Meeting in April, which allows the various village groups to report back, villagers to meet our District and County Councillors and our Community Police Officer, and some general discussion on the issues that effect our community.
The next ordinary Meeting is:
7-30pm Thursday 6th November
at the Memorial Hall
Each meeting starts with a ten minute slot for the public to ask questions or comment on Parish Council matters. Click here to see the Agenda.

Christmas shoe-box full of smiles – Please help.

A shoebox full of gifts means such a lot to the children and families – not only the presents inside but the thought behind it. Often this will be the only present the child has ever been given and they are greatly treasured, even the box and wrappers. Every contribution makes for another happy child.
What to do
* Cover a shoebox with wrapping paper, covering the lid separately. Please do not wrap individual items. (There are spare boxes in Parwich Church)
* Fill with Gifts – New & Unused small toys, crayons, pens, notepads, toiletries, gloves, hat, socks, toothpaste, brush, comb, soap, flannel etc. Don’t include anything with batteries, monster characters, military toys, makeup, books or breakables.
* Secure the Lid with 2 elastic bands.
* Label boy or girl and the age range.
The boxes will go to children in villages, schools, orphanages, refugee centres and Roma camps in the Balkans. Any donations towards transports costs are appreciated, it costs almost £3,000 to send a 40 ton truck to the Balkans.

The Final Postcard from China

Today was our last day in China. It’s been something of a marathon 12 hours but a magical and perfect end. It’s going to be difficult not to be too lyrical. We took The Harmonious Train two hours south west to Hangzhou- described by Marco Polo as the world’s most beautiful city. I could agree and I daresay the other thousands of Chinese who also came on their family day felt the same.
We came to China’s most romantic and famous West Lake (there are thirty others) Xi Hu, immortalised by countless poets. The rain was pouring down in torrents but there, between a sea of colourful Chinese umbrellas, was this monochrome vision of pagodas rising through the mist clad mountains above a lake dotted with dragon boats. I thought I had fallen into a film set. A small cruise on the lake passed romantic images of weeping willows and arched bridges. (more…)
REMEMBRANCE DAY

The first national act of Remembrance was held at Whitehall on November 11th 1920, when the new Cenotaph was unveiled to commemorate the passing of the Unknown Warrior on its way to Westminster 
Abbey. The Cenotaph, designed by Edwin Lutyens has become the focal point for the Nation’s Remembrance, with the reigning monarch laying a poppy wreath as a mark of the nation’s respect for the fallen of the two world wars, and all subsequent and ongoing conflicts. The following year, 1921, marked the first National Remembrance Day, then called Armistice Day, when the now familiar two minutes silence was first observed.

Key Stage 2 students at Parwich School, don’t forget you start swimming lessons from tomorrow (Monday 3 November); you will require your swimming kit, a towel and 20p for the locker. Also, if they have not already, please remind parents/guardians to fill in the consent form sent home the Monday before half-term and bring it to School.
