We had a good turnout at the Parwich First Responders’ Social Evening in the Memorial Hall on Sunday evening. Many thanks to all who brought food and refreshments for the event. A particular thanks also to the Responders themselves who give their time to train and be on call in case an emergency occurs. Parwich and the surrounding region is a safer place because of you!

Who's behind the mystery door?

As for our EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW, we’re edging towards our £40 target… but we’re not quite there yet. So please give generously, if you want to see our Parwich Calendar Boy MAN in a provocative – but decidedly prickly – pin-up pose.

To make it easier for people to donate, we have installed a collecting tin on the bar of The Sycamore. Thanks to Janet for granting permission, and special thanks to The Dovedale Gallery (Dig Street, Ashbourne) for donating the tin free of charge.

Tom is Strictly Finalist

On Strictly Come Dancing this week Tom and Camilla danced an energetic Jive and a beautiful Argentine Tango, but failed to find favour with the judges.  When the phone lines opened they were left standing at the bottom of the judges’ score board.

Tom & Camilla’s Jive

However, with a change to the advertised structure all three couples in the semi-finals are to go through to next Saturday’s final without a dance off.  At the start of this evening’s results show it was announced that the lines were being frozen, and at the end we were told that all the couples were through and this evening’s votes are being carried forward to next week.  (more…)

This week’s Strictly round up

See the week 3 JiveThis week Tom and Camilla are dancing the Argentine Tango and the Jive in Strictly Come Dancing‘s semi-finals.  They have already danced the Jive: it was their second dance in the competition (week 3), when they came second on the judges’ scores.  For everyone this is their first time with the Argentine Tango, that originated in Buenos Aires in the late 1800s.  Initially it was considered too raunchy for the ballrooms of Europe, and was altered into the Tango.

Vote for TomTonight the show starts at 6-10pm on BBC1, with the phone lines opening at approximately 7-10pm.

The lines will be open until 9pm, closing during the Results Show, which starts at 8-55pm on BBC1 this evening.  Note this week the Results Show is tonight, Saturday, and not on Sunday.

All are welcome to watch both Shows tonight on the big telly at the Sycamore.

Here is the week’s media round up:  (more…)

BLF decision next week

Just a quick note for those who missed the post mentioning that the Big Lottery Fund decision on the Memorial Hall redevelopment grant is to be announced on Wednesday 17th December.

The Grant’s Committee met on the 25th November, and initially the BLF said the official announcement would be on the 12th December, however a day or so later they contacted us to say it was delayed to Wednesday 17th (i.e. next Wednesday).

Plans for how we will respond to the announcement next week have been discussed at the Memorial Hall Management Committee meetings since then, but unfortunately we have to wait.

Thank you to Keith for contacting us about this (his email can be seen as a comment below).  In 2004 the community vote gave a clear go ahead for re-building the Memorial Hall, and the Committee and supporting project teams have put considerable effort into realising our community’s aspirations.  All stages of the process have been formally supported by the Parish Council and all the user group representatives on the Memorial Hall Management Committee.

From all of us here at PARWICH.ORG, a heart felt thanks for all the hard work that has got us this far, and our best wishes for the announcement next week.

Who's behind the mystery door?

Yes, it’s time to reveal our third EXCITING MYSTERY WINDOW – and once again, this is “one for the ladies”. So, if you’d like to see a well-known Parwich resident AS YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN HIM BEFORE, please donate online or via Mike Atkinson, Jane Bennett, Mike Hughes or Peter Trewhitt.

As we received a couple of donations after reaching our last target – including a generous contribution from the “Colours Of Your Heart” jewellery company at Hoganaston – we are rolling them over to this window. Again, we’re looking to raise another £40 for the Memorial Hall Fund.

There’s also still room for some additional Calendar Boys or Calendar Girls to take part! If interested, please e-mail the blog team at parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

Parwich Guizers

For many years the Parwich Guizers (also known as the Brothm Mummers) have been bringing festive cheer to Parwich and beyond. Last Saturday, the group (Denis, Roy, Ben, Arnold, Rob, Ken and Brian) ventured out on the road again, taking their traditional Christmas play to Buxton in the afternoon, and to various local pubs in the evening.

You are invited to join the tour, watch Bold Slasher swinging his sword, and see the Doctor and his gurdy gout on this video:

By double-clicking on the video window, you can also watch this clip in a larger widescreen mode.

It is possible they will also magically appear on Christmas eve in the village, maybe at The Sycamore and The British Legion.  Click here for more information on the Guizers and their play.

Emergency Support

The above group will be coming to give us a day’s teaching on what to do if you find a child in a life threatening situation.

It will be on Saturday 31st January 2009 in the Memorial Hall, and will run from 9 to 5, and will be free.

All areas of emergency situations involving children will be covered, including choking, drowning, poisoning, fits etc. We will have lectures in the morning and then spend the afternoon in (scarily) realistic scenarios outside, around the hall and in the village.

If you are a parent, a grandparent, a child minder, a teacher or just someone who would like to know how to help a child in an emergency, this course would be ideal for you.

Parwich resident, Jo-anne Jewett, launched her new book “The Beautiful Truth: make up made easy” today.  There was a potential mishap last Saturday with the whole stock of the book nearly being left in the rain outside an empty house by the delivery men.  Fortunately the Vicar, out walking the dog, was able to intercede, and offer temporary sanctuary at the Vicarage.

Parwich School PTA raffle

chaffinch paper weightThe Christmas raffle is a major source of fund raising for Parwich School PTA. Everyone is always very generous with raffle prizes and this year we obviously have the added bonus of the Crown Derby paper weight.  Any further prizes can be left at the School up to Friday 12th December.

Tickets are normally sold when people come to watch the school play (2pm Mon 15th and 7pm Tues 16th). However this year tickets can also be bought through the school until 3pm Tuesday 16th .

The draw will be made on Wednesday 17th December outside School starting at 3.15pm.  The idea being that we can hand the prizes out as the kids come out of school. Names are put on the back of all tickets and a contact number for non village people and those who can’t be at the draw so we can get prizes to them should they win.

With thanks for your support.

Sandra S has contacted us with the following thoughts on the current state of the B5056 between Fenny Bentley and the Parwich turn-off, with particular reference to the so-called “temporary” traffic lights:

1. Traffic lights.

Whilst searching for information on another subject, I noticed that the B5056 used to be the A524. How much sooner would the traffic light problem be dealt with if the road was classified as an A-road, and why was it downgraded in the first place?

The amount of heavy lorries putting so much pressure on the road should surely mean that a substantial surface should be put down to take the weight, or the lorries should be re-routed onto an existing A-road.

We do see roads with signs for no more than 7.5 tonnes.

Perhaps someone would like to approach the council with the above questions. I did ask Highways some time ago why this very busy road was not called an A-road? I did not get an answer, but more of a mumble.

P.S The traffic lights are battery powered apparently, and over a weekend they can run out of juice.

2. Road safety near the Bentley Brook.

Because so many people from Parwich travel on the B5056 past the Bentley Brook pub, would they please be mindful that where the road sinks on a regular basis just prior to the pub, there is actually a gaping gap under the road there. One day, the road will give – and on a selfish note, I just hope that I am not the one travelling by at the time. Has anyone noticed the wall listing?

Lorries pass on the opposite side to the pub laden with goods. On the way back, they are empty. I am certain that if they were laden coming back, then many more places on the B5056 would be at risk.

3. The chevron sign.

A van collided with the wall at the bottom of Ravenscliffe Farm next to the B5056. The wall was damaged. Some of it was knocked down. The gate and posts were obliterated. The chevron sign was also knocked off of its posts and sent into our field. That happened in October 2007.

I consider the chevron sign to be quite important on a fairly sharp bend. The wall and chevron sign were only put back up by the council last week. It has taken one year to put right.

It is a shame the cement in the wall will not last, due to it having been done in frosty weather.

The 50 mph signs are a good thing to help with road safety, but I am not too amused by the fact that signs have been erected on our land without even a please or thank you!

– Sandra S.
