Update from your local officer
At the moment our area continues to have a low number of crimes and incidents being reported to Police. We have had our most recent Community Forum, and have a new concern raised by the public to concentrate on. Some work has been done in relation to road safety issues, again some items as a result of concerns raised by yourselves.
One offence that isn’t that common – bedsheets were stolen from a washing line at Sandybrook between 6pm and 7pm, on Thursday 25th June 2009. More common was an offence of Criminal Damage committed between 8.00pm on Saturday 27th June 2009 and 00.50am the following morning. A vehicle parked in Parwich village had some windows and wing mirrors smashed.
Concern was raised about the number of people jumping off Mappleton Bridge and swimming in the river on 2nd July 2009. Officers did attend and speak to people there. The Parish Council have also raised this issue. We are looking at ways of making sure people are aware of the dangers, along with problems with litter and their behaviour to road users.
Another unusual incident occurred at Alsop en le Dale on Friday 3rd July 2009. Entry was gained to a barn and hay was set alight between 4am and 4.30am. Both Fire and Police Services attended. (more…)

Harness Racing this afternoon

Today (Sunday July 12th) sees the second of this year’s two Pikehall Harness Racing fixtures. The first race starts at 2pm, and admission is £8 (plus free admission for children under 14). If you’ve never attended one of these events before, then it’s an experience which is well worth sampling.

Fortunately the rain stayed away for J & L’s daughter’s wedding yesterday. Best wishes to the bride and groom. We were also lucky for last night’s concert, the rain continuing to hold off while we had refreshments in the churchyard, only starting towards the end of the second half.

Tickets have sold well and if you want to sit in the nave phone tel. 01335 390 529 to reserve your seat, with only a few left. Look out for a competition ‘The Lights of Parwich‘ (£10 cash first prize) coming soon at parwich.org.
The competition involves identifying pictures of lights in Parwich, so keep your eyes open.
You will be able to print out on two sheets all the photographs in the competition and then set off around the village, or better still send out your loved ones and have a spell of peace and quiet.
Youngsters looking for some extra pocket money for the summer holidays, this is a great opportunity.

Congratulations to Janet and Steve on coming fourth in the DDEP (Derby & Derbyshire Enterprise Partnership) Rural Retailer of the Year 2009. The results were announced at a presentation in Buxton this morning. Two other Peak District village shops (Litton and Winster) were in the top three. The prize is money to spend on the Shop.

“Suspected swine flu” update

For anyone concerned about “suspected swine flu” in school, we have been asked to clarify the following: 1. the medical advice given to the person in question is that it is probably not swine flu; 2. treatment was given as a precaution because they suffer from asthma; and 3. the person in question seems now to be recovering fast and so has only been unwell for a day or two.

As part of National Parks week – a series of events have been organised in the Peak District. Several of them have a theme – Peak into the Past – 3 of the events are almost on our doorstep, one down Dovedale, another from Hartington to Pilsbury Castle & the third from Minninglow Car Park. Others are just a drive away. The events look varied, interesting and can involve all the family. Please note that some events must be pre-booked and others you can just turn up on the day.

Dovedale at Dusk

Family Activity – A dramatised 3½-mile walk for families and history lovers, from Hartington to Pilsbury, helping celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology. Trip to Arley Hall (only a few places left)

Parwich & District Horticultural Society has only a few places left on its trip to Arley Hall on Wednesday 22nd July. The coach leaves the Green at 9-30am and includes a guided tour of the gardens with the head gardener paid for by the Society (there are fewer places on the tour than on the coach, so if the coach is full Society Members will be given priority on the guided tour). Costs are £10 for members and £15 for non-members.

This week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph is available in the Sycamore Shop or on-line. Local interest articles include:
- p. 4 £90,000 grants could make village hall dream a reality is an article on the recent grants towards the Memorial Hall redevelopment project, including the Peak Park Sustainable Development Grant, that mean we are now well within £100,000 of reaching our £868,000 target. One of the photos taken in the pub is in the paper and another can be seen on the paper’s website.
- p. 11 An Alsop barn burst into flames on Crosslow Lane last Friday as the high temperatures caused the hay stored there to ignite. Firefighters from Ashbourne and Buxton attended.
- p.20 & 21 A Barrowload of Fun at Village Wakes is a two page spread on Parwich Wakes 2009. With photos from the Saturday, the Hill Race and a special focus on the Wheelbarrow Race, it is well worth looking at (click on the image below and go p.20 to see the photos published in the paper). Minutes of the Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Community Forum held on Thursday 25th June, 7.30pm at Thorpe Village Hall.
PC Cooper chaired the meeting and welcomed all attending.

Meeting updated on actions taken by PC 1525 COOPER, following previous meeting.
Re Footpath at roadside Fenny Bentley – still not been tidied up. – Dick HARDY, DCC spoken to. Have had a restructure of Staff and clearing of overgrowth on rural roadside footpaths is now low priority. New team has been set up to deal with Emergencies. They will do this sort of work in their downtime.

Volunteering opportunities at the Y-Not Festival

Hi everyone,
Just to let you know we have a number of volunteering opportunities available for the Y-NOT festival (31st July – 2nd August), which, as many of you know, is located practically on our door step here in Parwich!
If you are 16 or older, and would like to volunteer, please contact me by email at: debbie@vcdd.org.uk. I will take your details, pass them on to the appropriate people, who will get in touch with you. If you are aged 16-25, it is a perfect opportunity to either start on your V-50 certificate, or contribute to the volunteering hours you have already accrued.
These opportunities will be going up on the do-it website: www.do-it.org.uk shortly. (You can apply for volunteering opportunities via the do-it website – have a look, it is pretty cool!). The minimum shift for things such as litter picking (the ‘green police’) or stewarding is 4 hours, before or after which you can enjoy the music free of charge, which is a bonus!

‘Rural Health Link’

Rural Health Link is a new project aimed to help people in this area attend health related appointments. There is a 50% subsidy on transport costs to all health related appointments, including trips to GPs (both Hartington and Ashbourne Surgeries), hospitals, chiropodists, dentists and physiotherapy.
This is particularly relevant to those of us who live in Parwich, Alsop, Pikehall and Ballidon, as there is no public transport at all for patients going to the Hartington Surgery.
Those in our area wanting to use the Rural Health Link please call Ashbourne Community Transport on 01335 300 670, and ask for the Rural Health Link Co-ordinator.
Rural Health Link is a working partnership between Ashboune Community Transport, Buxton & District Volunteer Centre, Bakewell Community Transport and Derbyshire Dales Volunteer Centre, and is supported by Derbyshire County Council (Cllr Simon Spencer’s community grants).
This is in addition to the existing provision by these groups. The Rural Health Link Co-ordinator will as appropriate organise your transport with these groups.

Trying to find out if Monday’s power cut had been reported and how long the power would be off for, with a number of electricity suppliers, was not straightforward.

Date of next Parish Council Meeting

Please note that the correct date for the next Parwich Parish Council meeting is Tuesday 14th July at 7-30pm. The meeting is a little later in July than normal, so it doesn’t conflict with Wakes, and as there is not a meeting in August.

The next meeting after that is Tuesday 8 Sept 2009. The Parish Council will be having meetings in the Pavilion whilst the Memorial Hall is out of use.

The New Memorial Fund was boosted by another anonymous donation of £500 over the weekend. The committee would like to thank everyone for his or her continuing hard work in raising the money.
Just a word about ‘anonymous’ donations. Sometimes they are from individuals or families that wish to remain quietly private or sometimes they are from a company who like lottery winners, don’t want to be inundated with other requests. Whoever they are we respect their privacy but say a very sincere thank you.
