A combination of low humidity and clear skies over the weekend made for some beautiful lighting conditions in the early evening. Kevin S. took this shot of the Roystone rocks (near Roystone Grange, between Ballidon and Pikehall) at around 7pm yesterday. Please click it to enlarge.

Exotics

Out now are these beautiful orchids, probably the Early Purple Orchid.

They can be found all over the White Peak area.

There is a lovely field full of cowslips and these orchids on the right hand side on the B5056 before you get to Hoe Grange and Longcliffe.

Thanks to JFS for this Parwich Orchid

Over the last week things have been happening so quickly it is difficult to know which photos to show.   Inside the oak floor has been laid and will be sanded and oiled, currently it is under hardboard to protect it, as work continues in the main hall.  Please click on any photo to enlarge it.

The oak and painted doors are all hung.  The photo below shows the double sliding doors, located under the messine storage, that open into the foyer.   The workman on his hands and knees is laying the natural limestone floor that runs from the entrance to the kitchen.  Oak skirtings will be fitted through the hall.

The kitchen has now been fully fitted, and what a kitchen!  (more…)

PARWICH PARISH COUNCIL
Minutes of the Annual Open Meeting held on Thursday 2 April 2009 at 7.00pm in the Memorial Hall

To consider and if accurate, approve the minutes of the Annual Open Meeting held on 3 April 2008.
RESOLVED that the minutes of the meeting held on 3 April 2008 be confirmed as a true record.

To consider matters arising from the Annual Open Meeting held on 3 April 2008.
* The Parish Council are in the process of developing dedicated pages on parwich.org. Agendas have been posted.
* Concerns raised regarding the B5056 are still relevant. The update provided by the Highways Department regarding the road conditions stated that the 1st set of temporary traffic lights are due to works being carried out by Severn Trent Water, these are due for completion by the end of April.
* The 2nd set of temporary traffic lights is due to subsidence. Designs for a crash barrier and solution are due for completion in June with works planned for late summer.
* The 3rd set of temporary traffic lights is due to the potential collapse of the road. The Structures department is investigating solutions.
*Concern was raised that the traffic lights are frequently faulty. Pc Cooper advised that faults should be reported to the Call Derbyshire Service or the police. (more…)

Parwich Bowls Club

Week commencing 10 May 2010.
After the euphoria of last weeks ‘double victories’, mixed fortunes this week. We had a win and loss.

Tuesday League – Away – to Baslow.  Baslow are a good team and are considerably higher in the League than we are. We did however win one game, but lost the other three. The overall match result was 69 to 56 to Baslow.
We were fourth from bottom of the league and still remain in that position.
Next match – Away- Bradwell B – 18 May. 6.30

Thursday League – Home- Baslow B
A similar story to last week. We did not do very well in the Doubles games, losing two games to one. However we again had a great turnaround in the Singles games winning four games to two.  The result was therefore a really good win by 120 to 112.  With any luck we will stay fourth from top of the League.
Next match – Away – Chatsworth B – 20 May. 1.30 ish.

It was really good to see someone on holiday in the Village use the green. Although a ‘flat green’ bowler he soon started to get to grips with some of our game. He was most complimentary about the facilities.

We will be down on the green around 6.30 ish on Monday night – we welcome newcomers.

Ideas anyone…?

We have received the following message from Sue H:

We know of a very nice Swiss girl who is hoping to spend 6 months in England from this July to improve her English. She is 20 and works as a secretary in the French speaking part (she also speaks German). Her English is not fluent enough for her to work as a secretary over here but she would prefer to find paid employment rather than have to pay for an expensive language school. We’re investigating possibilities such as language assistant in QEGS or waitressing. Does anyone have any ideas/openings, or does anyone need an au pair over the Summer? Please ring Sue H on 390334.

This week in the Stunner

As usual, the ANT is available on line or from the Sycamore. Normally we report on the ANT on the day it comes out but there’s always one of the blog team who forgets and reports a day late.  I can’t remember which one though.

The headline news this week is that Patrick McLoughlin not only retained his seat but received exactly the same number of votes this time as he did last time.  Mr Mcloughlin said that he had no idea of what the odds were of something like that happening but that he might buy a lottery ticket next week and “see what happens”.  There is also some election coverage inside the paper although “no mention of people being turned away from polling stations.”  There were certainly no local reports of crowds of voters running amok at The Sycamore or Bradbourne Village Hall this week where the ladies manning the polling station told me it had been a “quiet day, quite boring really”. Long-tailed tit

This long-tailed tit nest belongs to Christine & David and was photographed by JF-S.  The little white blobs are polystyrene.

Information from the RSPB website says that ‘The long-tailed tit is easily recognisable with its distinctive colouring, a tail that is bigger than its body, and undulating flight. Gregarious and noisy residents, long-tailed tits are most usually noticed in small, excitable flocks of about 20 birds. Like most tits, they rove the woods and hedgerows, but are also seen on heaths and commons with suitable bushes…it is similar to a pied wagtail’.

Derbyshire Prepared

A new website has been launched to help keep Derbyshire residents prepared and informed before, during and after major incidents such as severe weather and flooding. The site is called ‘Derbyshire Prepared’ and will include up-to-the minute information about ongoing incidents, useful contacts and advice for residents and businesses.

It has been developed by members of Derbyshire’s Local Resilience Forum (LRF) – the police and emergency services, Derbyshire County Council, city, district and borough councils, health agencies, the Environment Agency and Highways Agency. These groups already work together to manage incidents like severe weather, flooding, large fires, chemical spills or explosions but the website will allow residents to check information quickly and easily in one place.

The website features a range of information including:
* Safety tips and advice to help residents be well prepared for an emergency
* Advice and support for businesses on preparing business continuity plans
* Information for anyone organising a large community event
* The emergency plans Derbyshire has in place to deal with any major incident
* How to sign up to a community messaging service which can send residents text or e-mail alerts about incidents in their post code area
* Useful contacts and links to other relevant websites & incidents in the county and the new website will help get information out quickly and efficiently.

Residents are encouraged to sign up to the community messaging service to receive phone or e-mail alerts if incidents happen where they live.  Anyone can receive these alerts and they are often very useful.  We do publish relevant ones on the blog.

Why not check out the new site at www.derbyshireprepared.org.uk

Cycling Safety and Free Events

A PARWICH.ORG reader mentioned that it was good to see so many village children out on their bikes.

However they expressed concern that both motorists and cyclists need to look out for each other especially at the blind bends and junctions in the village.  Please take care.

Do let us know if there is any interest in the Police running a cycle safety session in the village.

Co-incidently a press release came from the Peak Park today on some free cycling events, the first being on Bike Maintenance at the Ashbourne Cycle Hire Centre this Saturday.  (more…)

Insurance Problems?

Following the post on insurance problems relating to ‘flood’ risk and the poll on interest on the possibility of specific solutions for our area, the insurance brokers, the Wilson Organisation, are holding a surgery at the Sycamore Inn from 5pm on Tuesday 11th May. Email CProw@wilorg.com to book a slot.

Many of you will have seen the recent article on this subject on the Parwich Village website and several of you have expressed an interest in discussing your insurance needs with an independent insurance broker, either in a surgery format or individually.

As a result we have arranged to come to Parwich on Tuesday 11 May and Bryan Elliott and I will be in the Sycamore Inn from 5pm onwards. The Wilson Organisation has strong relationships with many insurance companies and this means we can offer bespoke cover, which will cater for your individual circumstances, at competitive premiums. We have researched Parwich and the surrounding areas and we are confident we can help. Please come along and see us. Please email to confirm your interest and a suitable time from 5pm onwards on 11th May.

Dog fouling still a problem

Dog fouling continues to be an issue, as illustrated by the following email to the Blog from the School.

Would it be possible to post another message on the blog regarding dog fouling in the village? We seem to have a problem with someone allowing their dog to leave its mess by the top gate on quite a regular basis. I know this has been a problem elsewhere in the village.

The School will be preparing some posters to remind everyone, but in the meantime please clear up after your dog.

This week the windcatcher was installed onto the roof.  Its role is to circulate fresh air and ventilate the hall when necessary.

Internally the main floors have had their final preparation ready for the laying of the wood floor.  This photo shows Bertie giving his opinion of the new hall, standing next to the floor planking.

The oak facings at the front of the hall and alongside the public footpath are in place.  The stopes (stone bollards) on the footpath have been relocated to conform to disabled access regulations and this path will be open, as planned, on Monday.

As always click on any of the photos to enlarge them and thanks to Ben for these pictures.

Got nothing planned for Saturday, why not do something amazing this year and join in on the Ashbourne Breast Cancer Walk, 8.5 miles, open to walkers of all ages.

The starting point will be the Carsington Water Visitor Centre, leaving at 2.30pm therefore early arrival is recommended for all walkers, registration is required from all walkers including children – £10 adults and £5 for children. Click here for the registration form.

All the money raised from the 2010 walk will go towards funding for equipment for the Breast Cancer Unit at Royal Derby hospital.

Whilst enjoying this walk there’s plenty to see.   Our resident ornithological photographer, (not sure if you can say this) JF-S, went to Carsington Water, especially to see what bird life might be spotted during the big walk – birds include: tufted ducks, great crested grebes, redshanks, lapwings, godwits, barnacle geese and The A52s.  They may not be birds, but they will be entertaining everyone with their “tweeting” from about 4.15pm.

p.s – I know the A52s don’t tweet, they sing with manly gusto, but it flowed with the bird theme!

Bowls Club Double Win

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 3 May 2010.

This week what can I say? What a team. The walking, nay, staggering wounded have done the impossible. Well we did win both our games this week, which for us is awesome! Believe it of not the opposition did actually turn up as well. Anyway being the modest sort of outfit we are the wonderfully, marvellous details are as follows.

Tuesday League – Home to Matlock Bath.

Our first win in this league. We won three games to one. The match score was 75 to 67. Not a particularly convincing result, but mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow.

We were fourth from bottom of the league. This win keeps us where we are I think. Still better than dropping down a place.

Next match – Away- Baslow 11 May. 6.30

Thursday League – Home- Matlock Park.

It looked after the doubles games we were in for a bit of a hiding. We lost two games to one. The points for the opposition were considerable whilst ours were not very good at all.

Anyway a fabulous turnaround in the singles took place and we won five out of the six games. Bearing in mind the maximum points you can get in the singles is 90 (6 X 15), we got 85 to the oppositions 46.

Combining the doubles and singles scores we won by 123 to 97.
What a result.

Next match – Home – Baslow B 13 May. 1.30 ish.

We are entertaining a team from Ellastone on Sunday in a friendly. We will be down on the green around 2.00pm. Why not come down and have a look.

John B.

Avoid a Parking Fine in Ashbourne

This email has just come in from the Police Community Messaging Service.

Police in Ashbourne are warning motorists that they risk a fine, points on their licence or even a court appearance if they park illegally. Officers have received reports from concerned motorists and residents about drivers who have been parking on stretches of Derby Road where there is a solid white line in the centre of the road.

Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team Sgt. Steve Edwards said: “In particular the issue is on the hill stretch of Derby Road where there is a double white line system. Officers have been moving vehicles on but drivers are continuing to ignore the warnings. “White lines are there for a very good safety reason and as part of our commitment to reduce road casualties we will be strongly enforcing the rules. “We will also be targeting those vehicles which are parked half on the pavement, because while they are trying to keep the road free they are inconveniencing pedestrians as well as compromising road safety.” Parking on a stretch of road where there are either solid double white lines or solid single white lines is an offence which attracts a £60 fine and three penalty points on driving licences.
