Lucy Thompson, chatelaine and sometime shepherdess of Culland Hall grew up within spitting distance of Sissinghurst in Kent, planting her first White Garden at the age of twelve. Together with her husband Simon, who was born and brought up at Culland, they have spent the past 15 years redesigning and restoring the garden.
There has been a house on the site since the 12th Century but when Simon’s father bought the property in the late 1930’s he deemed it so ugly that he decided to demolish it and build a new south-facing Hall. Building had only just commenced when he was sent off to fight in the Second World War. Happily, he returned to find the property finished and in excellent order, despite lack of materials and labour.
The enchanting garden, set in 5 acres, is divided into “rooms”, each favouring rare and specialist plants within the hot border, white garden, potager, 19C walled kitchen garden and woodland walk.
Lucy hopes that those inspired by the gardens will take the opportunity to purchase rare plants from over 20 RHS Exhibitors and specialist nurseries exhibiting on the day.
Both Simon and Lucy had supported Mid-Derbyshire Mobile Physiotherapy for many years before deciding to open their private gardens for just one day a year to support this vital local charity who rely heavily on their annual donation.
Over 100 varieties of roses such as Fantin Latour and Konigin von Danemark should be in bloom when the gardens open on Sunday June 10th. from 11am to 4pm.
A hugely efficient group of friends rally round and supply and serve home-made refreshments during the day, allowing visitors to take a break in the 19C walled kitchen garden to reflect on this idyllic corner of Derbyshire.
