Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
What a pity more people did not turn up to see all the things available in the Village at the Parish Annual Meeting last Wednesday. Talk about conspicuous by their absence or what.
Anyway we had our first Club competition last Sunday and the Open Singles cup was superbly won by Dawn Allsopp. In a really good final Dawn Beat Rick Manning. A splendid afternoon was had by all.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – 15 May – Whitworth Park.
Our best win of the season so far and two wins in a row now. Whitworth had made a much better start to the season than we have. However, we managed to win three out of the four games, only narrowly losing the forth. The match result was Whitworth 61 Parwich 82 only two point off a maximum. Tough match next week though.
Next match – Home – Ashwood Park – 6.30pm 22 May.
Thursday League.
Away – Chatsworth – 17 May.
Having started well in this league the wheels are certainly falling off in the last two matches. Unfortunately we did not win any doubles games finishing up 23 points down. In the singles we did better, sharing the games three each, however Chatsworth won their games with a better points tally. The overall score in the match was Chatsworth 130 Parwich 97, our lowest score so far. Not sure if next week is going to be any better.
Home – Lafarge, Hope – 24 May – 1.45pm.
Nothing happening on the Green this weekend, however we will be there on Monday night at about 6.30pm.

Dear Everyone
I can’t tell you how moved I was on my last Sunday in Parwich Church when you gave me such a lovely farewell, and such a generous and unexpected gift. I felt really sad to be leaving you all, but I know that our bonds of friendship will remain strong, and I look forward to seeing many of you when I return to the village from time to time. I still feel like a stranger down South, and miss you very much. Parwich will always be a very special place to me, and I shall live on my bank of happy memories.
The garden tokens are a wonderful gift. I have bought some plants, and I am looking for a bird bath which will be a permanent reminder of all of you, and which you can see when you visit me! (This is a genuine and open invitation).
The lovely “New House” cards that I received from you have been decorating my walls ,and keeping me company for the past few weeks. Thank you so much.
With my love and gratitude for all your love and support over the Derbyshire years.
From Rachel

Plans for the Pavillion
Posted in Eating Out, News, People on Wednesday May 16, 2012| 2 Comments »
We have received the following message from Paul and Evie Burlinson:
“Hello,
Evie & I would like to put everybody in the picture regarding our intentions for the cricket pavilion. We are hoping to operate a small cafe / tea room at specified times during the summer months this being subject to raising the necessary finance to install a toilet & washbasin which is a legal requirement. As there is no drainage to this area this would necessitate the installation of a septic tank at an estimated all in cost of £2,200. The tennis club have offered an extremely generous amount towards these costs and Emma Spence has very kindly pledged a donation. At present Rob Clarke and myself are striving to remedy flood damage to the kitchen and also carry out new internal decoration (costs up to now have reached £200.00 for materials alone). In addition, there is no hot water and we need a new cooker and catering equipment.
So, ‘why bother’ you might ask… Well, we feel that the pavilion is a valuable asset to the village and its inhabitants and that our project will be of beneficial interest and value to our community. In order to achieve our goal we need some help! We would gladly appreciate any assistance (financial or practical) that you may have to offer. [Please note, we are not intending to feather our nests by any stretch of the imagination but we believe that this project will regenerate what is currently an underused area of our lovely village and maybe even rekindle interest within the cricketing fraternity and more – who knows?!!]
If you are able and willing to help, please call in at the Green, contact us on 488, or speak to Rob or Emma.”

Tissington Well Dressings 2012 – Day 2

It was a pleasant surprise to wake up to sun this morning, a bit of warmth on the barn will be extremely welcome, clearly they made a mistake on last night’s TV weather forecast suggesting that snow and hail may fall.
Everyone was hard at work when I arrived at the Carr’s barn at 9.45am. Helen and Ann, the real creative masters were busy pricking out the outline of ‘The Good Shepherd’.

From a photograph they create a picture using a range of materials, to achieve texture, depth and almost a 3D effect, and it is not easy.

Although mainly flower petals are used on Yew Tree Well, anything is potentially up for grabs. For Jesus’s hair the Carr children had to have a haircut; real authenticity is strived for. By mid afternoon the sheep were being worked on and a cry went up for wool. Edward disappeared for a significant period of time and came back armed with smelly wet wool. Yes he had just been out into the field, he eventually caught a sheep and gave it a trim.

Friday 18th May – 7.45pm – Memorial Hall
A surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady, the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world. Meryl Streep won an Oscar for her wonderful acting in the film. Click here for a review.

Tissington Well Dressing 2012

Another year has passed and it’s Well Dressing time. Every year I whinge about how cold it is in the barn but maybe because of the awful weather that we have had this spring I am becoming accustomed to it. However it is still true that it is actually warmer outside than in. I wrapped up warmly, the long johns have seen their first outing of the year and underneath my sweatshirt I had two thick thermal tops on.
The first day is always spent outlining the design, for some people it may seem monotonous but actually it very therapeutic and relaxing, seeing the picture emerging from the grey clay.

There are always a few hiccups which are rarely obvious once the design has been finished.
The clay has been well puddled but somehow some quite large stones have escaped Edward’s quality control and rise to the surface as you are positioning the coffee beans. Sometimes the edge of the clay collaspes and emergency repairs are needed; out comes the plastering trowel.
I have been busy outlining a rose and leaves on the right hand board. It is quite fiddly and as I want to match up the veins on the leaves with the design on the left hand board I then swap over. It’s at this point I realise that this part of the picture is not a mirror image. It would have been really obvious to us if it had been left, maybe not to the visitors. So after lunch Edward erases the outline, the template is flipped over and Margaret shows Edward how to prick out the design.

Bowls – At home this Sunday
Posted in Bowls, Societies, Sport on Saturday May 12, 2012| Leave a Comment »
Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
Still can’t put two wins in a week together. One win one loss again.
Matlock Tuesday League. Home – 8 May – Matlock Golf Club.
We have broken our duck at last in this league and against a very good team. Although we shared the games two each we managed to win ours by a greater margin. The overall score was Parwich 76, Matlock 57.Let us hope that this will spur us on to the next match although our opponents are doing considerably better than us.
Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 6.30pm 15 May.
Thursday League. Home – Matlock Golf Club – 10 May.
As the fixtures draw very often does it pitched us against the Golf Club again, but in a different league. We have been going really well in this league and were close to the top of the division. Unfortunately we did not do ourselves justice. We lost the doubles games two to one. 37 points to us, 54 to the Golf Club. We shared the singles three each, The Golf Club’s scores were better than ours though. 72 to us and 77 to them. Overall therefore we lost 109 to 131. Following last weeks draw and this weeks loss I think we will drop quite a few places in the league.
Away – Chatsworth A – 17 May – 1.45pm.
On Sunday we are having our first Club competition. Parsons Croft 2.00pm. You can have a go at tennis then come over to the bowling green. Action packed weekend or what!
Don’t forget the Parish Annual meeting next week in the Memorial Hall. We will be there trying to get you to come and join us.
