Parwich From A Different Perspective

Mike H writes:
A friend of mine has a rather hair-raising hobby – his idea of a weekend jaunt is to take his microlight for a spin. A couple of weekends ago Howard decided that he was going to take off from Leicestershire and head north-west to take a look at the beautiful village of Parwich (as I keep telling him about it!). Ace photographer Mark was also on board and was able to take some interesting snaps from above. I thought you might be interested to see them…

Weather Stats: October 7th to 13th – and the first frost of the autumn
Posted in Weather on Sunday October 14, 2012| Leave a Comment »

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:
A pretty tight forecast last week: high pressure did indeed dominate early in the week, giving still, calm conditions with cool nights and early mornings. The weather did break on Thursday as predicted, with a return of rain.
A very similar week in prospect, with some reasonable days early in the week (most likely Monday and Tuesday), but with Atlantic fronts moving through and bringing some rain and wind from Wednesday onwards. It’s looking like a bit of a wet end to this week.
Incidentally, I recorded the first air frost of the autumn this morning (Sunday 14th), with a recorded low of -0.4 degrees C at 8am.

Don’t forget to register for faster Broadband
Posted in Local government, Services on Saturday October 13, 2012| 3 Comments »
Broadband speeds seem to have become remarkably variable in the village, those of us using AOL on WiFi perhaps currently feeling the most frustrated. However everyone please don’t forget to register for better Broadband with Digital Derbyshire to help push improvements through.

Waitrose in Ashbourne have generously donated £527 to Parwich First Responders as a result of their green token collection where shoppers can indicate which charity they would like to receive help that month. PFR are extremely grateful for this support and would like to thank both the store and all those shoppers who “voted” for us. The money will help us with on-going training expenses and the purchase of new equipment.

Black (or is it grey) bins to be collected today
Posted in Local government, Services on Friday October 12, 2012| 3 Comments »
10-20am Have just phoned the Council on their waste hotline (tel 01629 761122) to confirm that the general household waste collection is going ahead today. Took about 8 min to get through, but I guess that is not bad given the change over will be at its height. Cheryl and Patti and others will be calling about their missing blue bins.
They have confirmed that our black (or are they grey) general household waste bins should be collected today as normal on the old rota. They can’t confirm what time other than by 4pm. So leave your bins out.
Good luck dealing with the rubbish rainbow.
Peter
Added 12am: the bins around the Green and in Church Walk have now been emptied.

A tribute to the “Laid Back Fell Runner”

Graham J writes:
Darren Holloway, a local runner who was runner-up in the Parwich Panoramic 5 in 2011, tragically died this weekend whilst taking part in the Ian Hogson Fell Race in Patterdale, Cumbria.
Darren was only 42, and he was a bit of a local hero to all of us who tried to run a bit. He was second in Parwich behind Chris Nicoll in our 2011 run, and third this year, when I had the privilege of presenting him with trophies for that, and for best Over 40’s veteran.
Daz always had something nice to say about Parwich in his blog “Laid Back Fell Runner”. Not only was he seriously fast; he was a lovely man and true gentleman, who loved the sport and the mountains with a passion. He will be sadly missed by all of us who only remember seeing his smiling face on the start line, and his heels thereafter.

Weather Stats: September 30th to October 6th

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:
Well, looking back it seems the overall gist of last week’s forecast was right – changeable, but details not quite absolutely accurate on a daily basis.
High pressure seems to have temporarily established itself, so we can expect dryer, calmer conditions early in the week, with unsettled weather looking like returning toward the end of the week.

Community Involvement in Parwich School

Here at PARWICH.ORG we though it would be worth highlighting this section from this week’s Parwich Primary School Newsletter in case there are any of our readers who do not normally read the Newsletter that may be able to help:
When we are planning teaching and learning in school we try to ensure that the resources and materials we use will engage and excite the children and encourage them to want to learn and develop new skills. And that got me wondering what skills and talents do we have in the community that we could bring into school?
Mike H and Lesley G supported the development of the garden, Peter T and Ian P led a ‘History of Parwich’ day, Robert S supported our sports teams, Fraser H enabled the development of the ‘Celebration Garden’ and enabled us to purchase the orchard and the willow tunnel, Helen P led a series of sessions with the Health and Safety Laboratory and taught us about Japan and Reverend Larkin leads the ICT Club.
But what other hidden gems are out there amongst our parents, grandparents, friends and families? What could you offer either as a one-off workshop or a series of sessions, perhaps we could offer something to you?
Please do contact school if you are able to get involved:

New Band in Parwich
Posted in 2012, Music, Photography, Posts of Note, Young people on Friday October 5, 2012| 1 Comment »
Thank you to Jane B for spotting this new musical phenomenon:
Four youngsters from Parwich could be the latest band to emerge from this small village, which already has a history of launching successful new musicians. The four, who still have to come up with a band name were heard to be practising on the corner of Croft Avenue and Creamery Lane, singing “We will, we will rock you”, using improvised instruments.

Mobile reception in Parwich: what are your experiences?
Posted in Opinion, Services on Thursday October 4, 2012| 8 Comments »
Kevin S writes:
As a user of O2 for my mobile phone for longer than I can remember, I have been getting increasingly frustrated by their intransigence and lack of respect for loyalty. Having just had another very unsatisfactory call with O2, I have now decided to leave for an alternative service provider.
I’ve currently got a very good offer from “3”, but since the mobile reception in the village is so poor, I would like to ask readers of the blog for their experience of the signal on “3” in Parwich.
Indeed, I am sure it would be interesting to everyone to hear people’s experiences on local reception for any of the service providers.
From my perspective, I feel that the O2 signal strength has been dropping of late – but that could just be a reflection of my frustration.
Thanks,
Kevin S
