Haddon Hall

Thank you to Anthony C for this reminder of what is on our door step:

I made this vid of a visit I made to Haddon Hall last Monday (8th April) with some visitors from the United States.

Honestly, jaws dropped. We sometimes don’t quite appreciate the scale of our heritage!

Hello Possums.

RIPObviously the past week has been dominated, as expected, by the passing of Baroness Thatcher the pinup of the N.U.M. Of course the Weedkiller Weekly is an entirely neutral organ so you must draw your own conclusions as to how great a prime minister she was or was not. I expect the ever ready lunatic fringe will be coming down from the trees and will be intent on causing a disturbance at her funeral service, loot a few shops, overturn some cars, battle with the police. Were you against the poll tax? Not me mate, they should pay just like everyone else. Oh well on we go.

You may have noticed in this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph that our own Mike G-P is to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats in September. He is part of a  group of fund-raising cyclists called Six Fat Dads, hoping to collectively raise £60,000 for five local charities: Derby Breast Cancer Support, Derbyshire Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance, Ashgate Hospice, Neuro Care and Derbyshire Community Foundation.

Bowls Season Underway

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Well we managed to survive the weather and our first matches took place this month. The only onlookers were a group of brass monkeys! What a start though.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – 9 April – Matlock Park B.

Captain Oates had been on the green last week, had wondered off and we haven’t seen him since. Suitably dressed in the best thermals we could find we shared the games with the opposition two each. However, you avid followers of Crown Green bowls will know that it is points which win matches. Fortunately Edith and Rick carried on from where they left off last season with a 21-5 win, only to be topped by Captain Dawn and Dot coming home to win 21-3. Although the two other pairs lost their points for were 17 and 19. The overall total was therefore Parwich 78, Matlock Park 50.

  • Next match – Away – Bradwell B. – 16 April 5.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Lafarge Hope – 11 April.

Now you see there is the word ‘Friendly’ in the name of the League, however, there are Clubs who do seem to have a win at all costs syndrome. The larger clubs decided that you would be penalised points if a team did not field 12 players ( 6 playing in three doubles and 6 playing in 6 singles ). Now Parwich only has 13 registered players so because of illness or holidays it is very difficult to field 12 players every week. We had 11 this week. In consequence we are almost certainly going to be docked points each week. Hopefully when the plonkers who thought up this daft idea realise the error of their ways we can sort things out for next year. In the meantime YOUR VILLAGE NEEDS YOU otherwise we are going to be disadvantaged virtually every week.

Having bored the pants off you regarding rules we did win this match as well. We won two out of the three doubles and four out of six singles. Edith and Dawn being again our best players. The overall score was Lafarge 109 and Parwich 128.

  • Next – Away – Whitworth Park – 18 April – 1.45pm.

We have our first friendly game this Sunday at Hazelwood at 2.00pm. If you fancy a ride out come and watch us.

Don’t forget that this Monday night we will be on the Green at 6.30pm for a few practise ends, all welcome. If this time is not convenient gives us a call.

John B.

Dogs on the Loose

If anyone has lost a dog or dogs, there were two spaniel type dogs – 1 black and white and 1 tan running free up the lane past the cuckoo gate at approximately 3.15pm this afternoon. They both made off through the trees and bushes up onto the hillside.

Hello Possums

Everyone survived the Easter break? Good.

expletiveThe B.B.C has issued an apology to viewers watching the annual boat race, after Oxford’s cox spurred his crew on to victory with a barrage of clearly audible expletives, which were picked up via his radio microphone. The television watchdog committee have stated that any future transgressions would ultimately result in the race being broadcast after the watershed.

weather13Apr7

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The weather certainly has the feel of the start of March rather than the start of April, but temperatures are gradually climbing and the snow is thankfully receding. The atmospheric conditions have been set for quite a while now, and the pressure has been moving in a narrow range for over 2 weeks. There are signs that this equilibrium is starting to get displaced, and that Atlantic lows are exerting their influence on the plug of cold air settled to the east of the UK. That means a change to more unsettled weather with more normal temperatures and westerly winds – much more usual weather for us. Sadly that also spells the end of the dry conditions, and there is wind, some rain and milder temperatures on the not too distant horizon.

Bowling Club: 2013 SEASON

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLING CLUB

I know that you have all been thinking ‘when will winter end?’; think no more.

The Crown Green bowling season is upon us. You will not have to put up with another repeat of Midsummer Murders, you can come and enjoy the open air!

We have managed to get the snow off the Green, so all we need now is for the days to be dry in order to try to dry the Green off a bit. Anyway we are hoping that all being well we will be sending down a few woods on Monday 8 April at around 6.30pm. Please feel free to come down and have a try. As in previous years we have woods that you can borrow. All you need is a pair of reasonably flat shoes.

If you can’t make Monday night give John B a call on 455, or John H on 302 to arrange a better time and date for you. Look forward to seeing.
