Lift to Matlock

Does anyone go into Matlock in the morning? Or to Ashbourne before 7:50 am (when the first bus to Matlock is)?

My car has broken down and I need to arrange transport for the next few days.

If you can help, please call Debbie Webster on 390568.

Hello Possums,

This week saw the state opening of parliament. For the first time, Her Majesty the Queen was accompanied by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. The Prince looked resplendent sporting more medals and orders than the Imperial War Museum, including a frequent flier badge on loan from Prince Andrew. However, some minutes into the proceedings, the Queen was rudely interrupted by an extremely noisy marching band outside. HMSlamming down her notes, she stormed outside to remonstrate with them. “Will you lot keep quiet, One is trying to make a speech” she yelled. A burly band master approached and said “Who the **** do you think you are, Dame Helen Mirren?

The Italians are in the headlines again for doing what they do best, fleecing the tourists, robbery without violence. The Antica Roma ice cream parlour, adjacent to the famous Spanish Steps, charged four Brits £50.00 for three scoops of ice cream, whipped cream extra, toppings iceextra, sit down extra, breathe the air extra. The Mayor has apologized profusely and offered the tourists a tour of the city as recompense. Unfortunately luncheon is not included, as the Mayor considers the restaurants a complete rip off.

Open Singles Competition

Sunday 12 May was the first Club competition, the Open Singles. We had a good turnout of players which resulted in semis finals being played by Dawn Allsopp against Harry Bunting and the other semi was Edith Rider against John Henbery.

These semi finals were played first to reach 15. Dawn started really well and unfortunately for Harry she did not relinquish the lead and went through to her fifth final in six years! Edith by the same token started really well against John and got through comfortably to the final.

In the final Dawn again got off to a flying start and had reached 6 before Edith was on the card. Keeping up some really class bowling Dawn continued to forge ahead. It was not until Dawn got to 12 that Edith started to play as we all know she could. The score got to 14-12 to Dawn before Dawn put on another great display of bowling coming out on top 21 – 16, a really good match.

Dawn has now won this competition six times and five of those have come in the last six years. Can anybody stop her from getting another hat- trick of wins next year ? The weather may have been awful, but the bowls made up for that.

Congratulations Dawn.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

Some good temperatures and a glorious Bank Holiday at the beginning of last week. The cooler and more unsettled conditions of the latter part of the week look likely to continue into the coming week with a mixture of sunshine and showers in prospect – good for the gardens.

Winning Week

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Week 5 – Another two wins again, we cannot keep winning like this! One of the wins to be fair was by the slimmest of margins, but a win is a win.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – 7 May – Whitworth Park.

We usually play quite well against Whitworth Park, but this week we struggled. Having won three out of the four games you would have thought that the match was in the bag. However, the one game we did lose we lost with a vengeance. Although our pair played valiantly their opponents could do no wrong. In the end we scraped a well earned win 66 points to 65.

  • Next match – Away – Ashwood Park, Buxton – 14 May 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Wirksworth – 9 May.

The weather was diabolical, freezing cold and throwing it down with rain, but what a team. For the first time in a long time we won all three doubles games. We had another two stonking wins. Dennis and Audrey won 21-5 and John H and Liz won 21-6. Just to put the icing on the cake Ian and Dot won 21-17, making 63 to 28 in total.

The singles proved equally decisive for us winning 5 out of the 6 games. The final overall score was one of the best we have achieved 149 to 99.

Five matches five wins, scary stuff!

  • Next match – Away – Chatsworth – 16 May – 1.45pm.

We are having one of our own competitions this Sunday, the Open Singles. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather. The matches will start around 2.00pm. Come down to the Green and have a look and a cup of tea.

Hello Possums,

SunEverybody basking in the bank holiday sunshine? You might be battling with your BBQ, cursing yourself for not cleaning it last time you used it, or having a quiet word with your cantankerous lawn mower. Never mind, crack open a tinny me old cobber, and watch the world go by.

earA man has discovered a human ear whilst walking his dog in a graveyard. Police have cordoned off the grounds of St Mary the Virgin Church in Aylesbury, and are treating it as a potential crime scene. The coroner has ruled that a proper hearing is out of the question until the other ear is found. (more…)

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The temperature just nudged 20 degrees on Thursday, and it looks like tomorrow (Monday) could go higher in sheltered spots. The dry conditions are starting to cause a little concern for our gardens though.

It looks like we have a glorious Bank Holiday in prospect with lots of sunshine and warmth. This doesn’t look likely to continue into the working week with conditions becoming a bit more changeable.

The Derbyshire County Council election results are now in for the two local divisions, with Simon Spencer retaining his seat and Irene Ratcliffe regaining her’s after a four-year gap:

Dovedale Division: including Parwich, Alsop & most of Pikehall

Dovedale

Wirksworth Division: including Ballidon and the rest of Pikehall

Wirksworth

The Conservatives have lost control of the County Council, with Labour achieving a substantial overall majority (taking 43 of the 64 seats). The average turnout rate for the County as a whole was 34.9%.

(Added 4th May: Overall for the County the political split in voting was Labour 43%, Conservatives 29%, UKIP 18.5%, Liberal Democrat 7.5% and Others 2%. Interestingly the BNP vote of nearly 11,000 in 2009 has evaporated, but the UKIP vote of under 2,000 in 2009 has risen to 3 votes shy of  38,000. The Liberal Democrats won three seats, but UKIP won none; does this mean that they also will be arguing for PR? What might this mean for next year’s elections to the European Parliament where there is PR?)

Derbyshire Dales car parking review moves to next stage

The first detailed policy review in 10 years of public car parks across the Derbyshire Dales is moving to another stage of public consultation. Derbyshire Dales District Council – which operates 33 pay and display car parks throughout the Dales – has put together a set of initial recommendations after inviting local people and traders to give their views on the way ahead over the past two months.

Recommendations drawn up by a special sub-committee carrying out the review are to be considered by the District Council’s Environment Committee on 16 May.

Once formally identified, the options will go forward for a further round of public consultation. The consultation programme to date has included community forums, focus groups with traders, residents, disabled users, town and parish councils and tourism and stakeholder organisations. Feedback has also been available by post and online – and local people will again be encouraged to have their say on the options during May and June ahead of final policy recommendations early in July. A new car parking policy will be adopted by a full meeting of the District Council on 25 July, with implementation set for 1 October this year.  (more…)

Winning Week

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Week 4 – So far we appear to be doing quite well. Having said that we did start off last year really well, but tailed off towards the end of the season. Must be something to do with being age’d ‘p’s. Anyway two good wins.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – 30 April – Bakewell.

I have mentioned before the strange elongated green that Bakewell play on causes us and others not to play so well against them, well we bucked the trend this week. We managed to win three out of the four games. Pat and Clara had a stonker, and they won 21 to 7. Edith and Rick had their usual gem of a game. Anyway the final outcome was Parwich 70, Bakewell 55.

  • Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 7 May 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Baslow – 2 May.

Don’t say it too loudly, but in this league we have played four, won four. Must have been playing all the weak teams! However win or lose you could not have had too many better afternoons to laze a few hours away and to top it all we won! For once the weather was glorious. We only won one of the three doubles and trailed 61 – 48.

In the singles however we won 5 out of 6. Because Baslow had one fewer player than us we also got a bonus of three points giving us an overall win 136 to 123.

  • Next match – Home – Wirksworth – 9 May – 1.45pm.

Can we keep our good form in the Thursday League up? Why not have a meander down to the Green and have a look. It won’t cost you anything and we will even give you a cup of tea and a biscuit.
