A big thank you and help required.

Mick Edge sent in the following request for a volunteer or volunteers to temporarily take over his voluntary mowing in St. Peter’s Churchyard:

To whom it may concern,

Stuart Chambers talked to me regarding asking for help for a season to mow my section of the Churchyard, because of my other commitments. Would the people please come forward, who are saying I spend too much time talking, when I should be mowing, to do their bit. If it was a paid position the situation would be different. I am looking forward to you all volunteering.

Mick Edge

Stuart asked us to give a very big thanks to Mick for all the work he has done in the Churchyard to date and to say that “he will be much missed” over the next season (not least because “he has the worst part of the church yard“). The Churchyard is looking really great and all the team, that work so hard keeping it so, do a fantastic job. If you are able to help, please speak to Mick or Stuart.

Thank you Lynne G for this information about the ‘Sit and Sew’ events you and Mandy N are organising. You can see see Lynne’s blog by clicking here. What a lot of enterprising folk there are in Parwich.

If you’re anywhere in the region of Ashbourne, Derbyshire in the Peak District, why not come and sit and sew with Mandy and me every fourth Friday of the month – 10am til midday.  Bring along hand sewing and Mandy will be bringing Xmas project kits too if you’re interested.  We’ll sit, sew, chat, drink coffee, eat cake and generally put the world to rights.  Workshops coming too on Mondays from January so stay tuned.  Let us know if you’re coming and email Mandy or me (lilysquilts@gmail.com) if you need more information!

Weedkiller Weekly #47

Hello Possums,

clownWest York, Pennsylvania: An 83 year old professional clown has denied culpability, after crashing his van whilst attempting a u-turn on a busy highway. The arresting officer told the court, that the man’s over-sized shoes were the main cause of him losing control of his vehicle; a claim that the defendant hotly contested. As the local court were unable to bring the case to a conclusion, it has now been referred to the Clown Prosecution Service.

empire state19 year old Jyote Anige, from Nagpur, is confirmed by the Guinness Book Of Records as the smallest person in the World. Jyote stands at two feet and half an inch tall, and hopes to break into the lucrative world of Bollywood. On a recent promotional tour of New York she visited the Empire State Building, but was only able to visit the second floor as she was unable to reach any higher buttons.

We will be moving to Parwich in two weeks time with our 10 week old Springer Spaniel, we know of classes in Onecote but wondered if there were any nearer to Parwich.

Many thanks.

Butterflies Galore

Thank you Saskia for these photos and the following:

Hasn’t it been a fantastic year for butterflies? I still have tens of Small Tortoiseshells, some Peacocks, a Red Admiral, a Brimstone and a Painted Lady (I hope I’ve got their names correct!) feeding on the Valerian and Buddleia , whilst others are sunning themselves in the late Autumn sun. The only one that I haven’t seen this year is the spectacular Humming-bird Hawkmoth.

What visiting butterflies have you seen in your garden recently? (I’m a complete novice so only recognise the very colourful species!)

Saskia T

More photos of any other species taken locally are most welcome. (Fiona, if your verbena is still so busy, that might make a great shot.)

The book ‘Rails to Ashbourne’ by Howard Sprenger is now published by Kestrel Railway books (click here for details). It contrasts the older Uttoxeter to Ashbourne line with the relatively more recent Ashbourne to Buxton line, now the Tissington Trail. Obviously this latter had a major local impact and much of the information and pictures in the book relate to our area. (If any of our readers get a copy we would be pleased to post a review of the book focusing on the nearby sections.)

Beware Red Flags

Police are asking people in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales area to keep an eye out for any red pennant-style flags (made of thin waterproof material) appearing in hedgerows, trees or outside their properties. These have appeared near premises where suspicious activity has been reported and we would be grateful for members of the public to get in touch if they see these flags, by calling Derbyshire Police on 101, quoting incident number:  382 of 20.9.13

Weedkiller Weekly #46

Hello Possums,

Well, it’s been a tumultuous week here at Weedkiller Headquarters; despite all our efforts, our recently appointed food guru, the fabulous Delia Smith, has been lured back to Waitrose. sofaOur interior design team bent over backwards to create the ideal working environment for her by painting her office in canary yellow with upholstery in Norwich City colours; her package included luncheon vouchers, canariesbus pass and even her own personal keys to the executive loos; all to no avail. Pippa has also declined, due to her festive commitments at Waitrose. She is presenting her festive tips: such as the self-pulling cracker for people on their own at crackersChristmas, an indoor snow machine, a pack of expensive wine labels to disguise cheap plonk, tabletop hock and a nice goose on the dinner-table.
