Watch out for broken glass

There were a number of broken glasses on the Green and by the playground. The early morning cleaning elves have tried to pick up all the pieces, but parents make sure children take care until the Greens have been mowed several times, pushing any small pieces into the ground.

Not a Bad Week on the Green Sward

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

No new humans have landed on the green this Monday, must have been a good football match on the idiots lantern. Thinking about it that is a contradiction in terms. Anyway back to a proper game, one and a half wins this week.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Wirksworth – 24 June.

The fixtures computer threw a wobbly this week as we played Wirksworth twice. At present they are just ahead of us in the league and we needed a good result. Although we won three out of the four games the one we lost was by some margin, hence the half win, it was a draw 70 points each. This of course will not improve our position in any way and may, dependent on how teams below us do, drop us a place or two. Difficult match next week against a team second in the league. Still we are just about holding our own.

  • Next match – Away – Bakewell – 1 July – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Wirksworth – 26 June.

We very nearly had a hat full in this match, even though we were a player short. For once our doubles pairs showed how they can play the game, winning two out of the three games and only just losing the third. We won all six of the singles games with John H the pick of the bunch winning 15 – 1, Dawn and Rick coming a close second. Because we were one player short we had to deduct 3 points from our score, but even so this still gave us an aggregate of 148 – 82, what a win, only 5 points away from a maximum. Don’t think we will have the same result next week though.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 3 July – 1.45pm.

Great result also from Open Gardens last week, let us hope we have an equally good time during Wakes Week.

John B.

Hummingbird Hawk Moth

Open Gardens

Seen today in Parwich feeding on valerian (Valeriana officinalis) growing in my drive, a hummingbird hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum). Has anyone else in Parwich seen this remarkable insect? It hovers motionless over a flower while it inserts its long proboscis into the flower to extract nectar, just like a humming bird. My brother and I watched this for about 2 minutes, entranced by what we were watching as it moved from flower to flower. If I had had a camera to hand we could have had a good picture but it suddenly flew away. When I explained to an Open Gardens visitor what we had seen he identified it for us. An image of this moth can be seen on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbird_Hawk-moth#mediaviewer/File:Macrogl_Stellat.jpg

What a great day it has been, so many visitors, such glorious weather and all our visitors so appreciative,

Mike R

Open Gardens 2014

With great weather, home-made scones and stunning gardens it was hardly surprising that we had a record attendance at this year’s open gardens. Garden owners and volunteers can be justifiably proud of their hard work and resultant success. The event is organised by Parwich & District Horticultural Society. The bumper proceeds will be used to underwrite the main Flower & Vegetable Show in September, and then the Society will allocate support for local groups and causes.

Here are a few photos I took around the Memorial Hall, but, if any readers have photos of the gardens, please do send them in to the Blog (parwich@hotmail.co.uk):

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

High pressure continues to dominate, giving us a beautiful day for Open Gardens, and a fine start to the week. It looks like the weather could be breaking down toward the end of the week though – but at this stage it’s pretty much guesswork. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a fine Wakes!
