The Memorial Hall is licensed for ‘public entertainment’ and we have an additional MPLC umbrella licence. This means we can show any commercial video or DVD (covered by that agreement) for an annual fee as long as we do not name the film in our general publicity (though we can send details directly to individuals that request this) nor charge admission for the films shown under this agreement. There is no restriction on the number of films we show in the year.
Previously we showed films under separate arrangements with Film Bank by which we were licensed to show the individual films obtained from them. Arrangements had to be made for each film individually, and, though we could advertise the film and charge admission, the cost of each film was greater than the current cost of the annual licence plus any DVD hire.
It is possible if required for us to show films under the old arrangements, but as the current umbrella licence seems to be working well we have no plans so far to do so this year. The situation will be reviewed in the Autumn (2008), to see if there has been any drop in numbers attending films (so far the reverse is true) and check whether income from raffles, refreshment and any donations cover our expenses. At present it is anticipated we will make a small surplus that will cover any potential repairs to the equipment and contribute to the Memorial Hall redevelopment fund.
Note. We do not maintain separate accounts as our finances are administered through the Memorial Hall’s general operational account.
