Beware of a scam involving texts saying you have a parcel awaiting delivery!
Warrington Trading Standards have recently informed Nottinghamshire Police of a current scam doing the rounds – please be aware. Warrington Trading Standards have contacted Phonepay Plus following complaints about text messages consisting of the text “!! URGENT!! Large parcel awaiting delivery, please call now on +23222270680 for delivery tomorrow INTERNATIONAL PARCEL DELIVERIES”
Calls to the number will be charged at £1.50 per minute. The message is 6 minutes long. Phonepay plus advise that they have contacted the networks in order that they bar access. Please do not contact Phonepay plus as they are aware of the scam which appears to be connected to Sierra Leone. It may take 24 hours to block the number.
Thank you.

Ladies and gentlemen,
Buxton police shpould start an investigation. There is a lot of money paid to the people that use the Sierra Leone phone number. This is NOT an usual number, but it is a “Premium Rate” number. The owner of that number gets a share of any incoming call.
And if someone is telling you a lie to trick you into calling that number it is FRAUD.
It is the job of the Buxton Police to start an investigation – and an investigation is possible.
We are working in the fields of consumer protection in Germany and haven’t been able to find any possibility to get in touch with the Buxton police.
If anyone could reach Buxton Police, send them the follwoing link

Thank you very much

Phonepayplus have known about this scam (at least) since November 07, so they certainly seem to be taking their time if they are telling the networks to block this (and related) number(s).
Anyone who receives one of these messages or falls victim to the fraud should (pace Trisha Mellor’s advice) contact PhonePayplus on http://www.phonepayplus.org.uk/consumers/complain/forms/ComplaintForm.asp?QueriedTelNum=+23222270680 or by phone: 0800 500 212 between the hours of 8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. PP+ collect statistics on the incidence of these scams and can advise on trying to get your money back. (You may have to explain that you are not complaining about the Studio Telecom case based in Belize which took place a couple of years ago and which is the subject of a chain email doing the rounds.)
And since PhonePayplus (the “regulator”) will not take any meaningful action against the fraudsters involved, I agree with the previous poster: The police should pursue this matter.
