The Police remind everyone that Christmas is not a good time to forget your normal security measures:
As the festive season rapidly approaches, the criminal opportunists in our communities will be preparing to take advantage of the fact that we are all busy getting ready for the celebrations, so we should be extra security conscious.
In one in three burglaries, the thief doesn’t have to force entry to gain access to a home, as residents leave windows or doors open when they are out or in another part of the house. Prevention need not cost money, simply closing and locking doors is sufficient to prevent these unwanted incidents occurring.
As bicycles are popular Christmas presents, owners will be able to have their bicycles ‘marked’ and the details can also be listed on a database to make identification easier, should they be found after being lost or stolen. Crime prevention events will be held in the New Year, including ‘bicycle marking’.
Police are working together with the charity, Age Concern, to ask people to take care of elderly and vulnerable residents in their area during the Christmas period. Christmas can be a lonely time of year for many people. In this area, we have managed to reduce the number of cars being broken into but most vehicle crime is by opportunists; thieves will simply wander streets and car parks looking for items left on view and will steal them by breaking a window, so avoid leaving gifts and property on show, such as satellite navigation systems.
Although Derbyshire is a safe place to live, the potential for drink-related crime increases at this time of year, so extra patrols are being put on to reassure residents and help keep the streets safe during the evenings.
