It’s that time of the week again with the release of the 1 April edition of the Stunner – available to buy in the pub or to read on your computer when the e-edition goes on-line. I will start with a story which appears later in the paper but celebrates the achievements of Parwich’s own rugby hero, Bertie L:
p.45 – Under-9s runners-up in counties cup – Ashbourne RUFC Under 9s travelled to Newark to take on the best teams from across three counties in the Notts, Lincs & Derbyshire Cup. “Most of the opposing teams are from much bigger and more established clubs, but Ashbourne displayed maximum quality, effort and determination to come away with a well-deserved runners-up spot.” The article is peppered with references to our local hero – his captaincy, his try scoring and also his visit to the sin bin!
p.6 – Drivers are hopping mad over “foolish” road-kill fine plan – Motorists in Ashbourne and surrounding villages could be among the first to see tough fines imposed on them for running over animals. Joe King, from the newly formed national organisation – the Federation Against Killing Everything – said: “Some creatures are more valuable to the countryside than others. Killing a rabbit can be dealt with by a straightforward fine – the same can be said for most types of mice – but heaven help you if you kill an otter.” Drivers beware.
p.7 – Top Acts in line-up – The Y Not Festival in Pikehall has secured two of the most popular up and coming British indie bands: Nine Black Alps and The Young Knives.
p.16 – Easter Fun – Following on from the recent Credit Crunch post on the blog, I thought I would point out a page of offers in the Stunner with vouchers for National Sea-Life in Birmingham, Dudley Zoo, the Tamworth Snow Dome, the Wedgewood Visitor Centre, Laser Fun in Nottingham and Sheffield, Water World in Stoke, Skirmish Paintball in Birmingham and the Blackpool Tower and Circus. OK, not all very local but if anyone is planning a day out to one of these places in the Easter holidays, they could save a few bob.

Kudos to the Y-Not organisers for bagging a couple of relatively well-known bands for this year’s festival. The Young Knives are a really good live act, actually – I saw them play in Nottingham about 18 months ago, and enjoyed them a lot.
