Crime in the Derbyshire Dales has gone down even further – boosting figures that were already lower than almost anywhere else in England.
New Home Office figures reveal:
- only 25 crimes per thousand people in the Dales – by far the lowest figure in Derbyshire.
- Overall crime in the Dales is down by 7% on a year ago.
- Derbyshire Dales has the lowest rate of vehicle theft in England and Wales – only one theft per thousand people
- Dales residents are also the least likely in England and Wales to be the victim of a robbery, with only 11 such offences last year.
- Burglaries in the Dales also fell last year – at only two per thousand people that’s the second lowest figure in England and Wales.
Chief Superintendent Peter Lewis, police commander for the Dales and High Peak, said: “These are some really pleasing statistics that show how the levels of crime occurring in the Derbyshire Dales area have fallen once again. We have worked hard with our partners to focus on key areas of concern to local people so it’s good to see these results.” Few districts in the whole of England have a lower crime rate than the Derbyshire Dales. The 25 crimes per thousand people statistic is the best in Derbyshire, where the county average is 45. At the other end of the scale, the city of London’s crime rate per thousand people is 223. The figures were welcomed by Derbyshire Dales District Council. Leader Councillor Lewis Rose OBE, who is also Chairman of the Safer Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership, said: “It is fantastic news that the continuing efforts of the police, the District Council and our other partners are succeeding in keeping the Derbyshire Dales such a safe place to live, work and visit. “To further reduce such exemplary crime statistics in these tough economic times is a magnificent achievement and an endorsement of the way we listen to what local people are saying and act on their concerns.”
