What a shame there wasn’t medals for the junior races tonight, they ran their socks off! We have to remember these maybe future senior competitors that need a little incentive.
In point of fact the junior races are organised under the auspices of the Fell Runners Association by David Denton who has been organising childrens races for many years, and is a respected member of the FRA.
When we offered medals last year for the winners of the childrens races, David politely declined the offer. David’s expressed wishes were that no prizes be offered for the childrens races, but that every child be rewarded for taking part. Last nights childrens races were the third in a series of four organised by David (the final one being in Bradbourne at the end of August), and none of these races are charged for or have prizes.
The big bucket of sweets you may have seen on the finish line travels around from race to race, and every child who enters gets to partake.
Having helped with other races in this series, and seen the numbers of children entering grow year on year, and watching the sheer enjoyment of the kids, David clearly understands the successful format with the children in mind.
On slightly different note, we are still counting the proceeds of last night, but it is clear that we will have raised a large amount of money which will benefit all the children of Parwich.
Thanks to all the many people who contributed to a great night.
Just to note that my kids have run in the Jnr races, although they have not been able to make it this year, owing to other commitments. They did very well, and never complained about the lack of medals; indeed, they were highly excited by the sweets! So, I think Dave has it right.
I ran in the Senior race last night, and woudl just like to say a huge thank you. The marshalling was superb, and the route is fast and testing. I think I improved on my time of last year (awaiting results), but was much closer to that dog last year, so it must have been training.
Why does David prefer to give sweets to the junior runners instead of a permanent reminder for their efforts, something to save?
