PDHS 2010 AGM
CHAIRMANS REPORT
A very successful year for the society despite the doom predicted after missing a main show in 2009.
We were lucky enough to be the 1st users of the new memorial hall which opened the Thursday before Open Gardens. This proved to be a fabulous venue for showcasing the childrens work and also for the wonderful cream teas. Entries were down on the childrens show despite the help and guidance the school has been receiving from members of the society in their school garden but hopefully this has been rectified for next year. A number of new gardens were opened and they all looked stunning. There were many 1st time visitors to the village and many commented on how wonderful the event was.
I am sad to report that 3 key members of the cttee have resigned over the last year. Peter Trewitt will be greatly missed for his help and historical knowledge and I would like to thank him for the last 10 years of his service on the cttee. Ben Bennett and Pat Barnet have both stood down for personal reasons and again I would like to thank them for their generosity and unstinting help over the years.
I would like to acknowledge Jane Bennett and Glynis Drummonds support for the society for overseeing the planting up of the Memorial Hall ground and ensuring that our donation was used well.
I would also like to thank the Parwich Pruners for maintaining the Jubilee Garden area on behalf of the society.
The Main show had a new look this year to take into account the loss of the Open Flowers classes. Photography and men only cookery classes were very well supported and with a little diversity I am sure that the main show will continue to encourage entries from the ordinary village gardeners.
Our trips and talks have continued throughout the year and have been well attended. Thanks to Dot and Liz for organising all of them.
The Bob Matthews Quiz was well attended and thanks to Bill Whitfield for organising it and to Lu for providing such wonderful prizes.
Going forward I hope the society continues to adapt to the changing gardening practises and abilities of the village. As with any committee we are short of members and would greatly appreciate any new faces who want to help organise and guide us in our meanderings through the horticultural year.
Thank you again to everyone in the society and in the village who have supported our events and been a part of the success of the last year.
