Monday – The next Community Forum

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Derbyshire Police want to meet and listen to the local Communities and their Derbyshire Police want to meet and listen to the local Communities and their Representatives, so we can find out what concerns the local people. Along with other Agencies we can then deal with those concerns and continue to improve the quality of life across our area.

Whilst we try to speak with Parish Councillors, Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators, local Schools, and members of the public, this tends to be done with the individual groups. We want to try and get people from different groups, and the general public, to meet together, to discuss concerns, and then work together to resolve any problems. The aim is to try and do this by having Community Forums, one on each Beat.

This is a further opportunity to influence how your area is policed, and to share ideas with other parties, including people from other villages within the Beat. Other Agencies will be involved, such as the County Council, District Council, Peak Park and Fire and Ambulance Services.

As I have explained before our area has been ‘christened’ the Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Team. Let me stress that it is purely because Tissington is in the centre of our area, which includes Mappleton, Thorpe, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Bradbourne, Ballidon, Kniveton, Alsop en le Dale, and towards Pikehall.
We are hoping to have Simon TRANTER, Derbyshire County Council Traffic & Safety Manager for our area, attending.

Our area is widespread and I understand that some concerns to residents of Mappleton may have no relevance to those at Alsop en le Dale. However it may well be one village can learn from another’s experience, and we can all benefit by getting together.

If you wish to talk to me about the idea, please contact me on 0845 123 33 33, or call in to Ashbourne Police Station. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Ian COOPER Police Constable 1525

Police warn of ‘false legacy’ scam

Police are warning people about a scam where victims are urged to hand over their bank account details.

A woman living in Tideswell contacted police when she received a letter saying a relative of hers had died in Spain and that she was entitled to some of the relative’s money.

The letter asked her to disclose her bank account details so the money could be transferred.

The lady was immediately suspicious as she does not have any relatives in Spain.

We are concerned that some people may be duped by this scam and we would urge anyone who receives letters or emails of this nature asking for bank details to ignore them.

Thank you.

Police in the Derbyshire Dales would like to bring to the attention of householders in the Ashbourne area that in recent weeks there has been an increase in burglary of houses where car keys are targeted resulting in the theft of a vehicle from outside an address. With three offences in the last month, this is only a slight increase, but householders are reminded to safeguard keys to motor vehicles, do not leave them near to insecure doors and where possible ensure that car / house keys are kept away from doors when locked – to ensure that people cannot reach through and open locks etc. Please report all suspicious activity to the Police.

Over priced alarm system warning

A home security company has been contacting residents in the area. Although this is a legitimate company, they use high pressure selling techniques and often sell over-priced alarm systems to elderly people that are sometimes too complicated to use. They also sell long term warranties, ie. a 20 year warranty, for maintenance on the systems.

Always obtain several quotes. Even if the visit is solicited, householders have 7 days cooling off period. If you do go ahead, do not let work start straight away and don’t sign anything to say that work can commence before the cooling off period is over. Thank you.

Suspicious circumstances?

On Monday night a car was parked on one of our lanes. Some one stopped to ask if everything was OK; the man in the car said he had just pulled over to make a phone call. However the man appeared awkward, even shifty.

This is very probably nothing, but if you are concerned by any incidents make a note of the details and any car registration number.  It is OK to ring the Police on 0845 123 33 33, or Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111. The Police are happy to get information that leads nowhere if it also means the occasional phone call that leads to something.

September Newsletter PC Ian Cooper

Update from your local officer  September 2008

Its been a fairly quiet month on our area. The downpour we suffered in the early part of September kept officers extremely busy around Ashbourne, and some of our villages did suffer from flooding.

We’ve had little crime. At around 2100 hours, 12th September 2008, damage was caused to a house door in Kniveton village by an unknown person banging on it.

We had another collision on the A515, near to the Rakes Lane junction, Tissington. A BMW overturned and the four occupants were lucky to come out virtually uninjured. I have submitted a report to Derbyshire County Council, via HQs, asking them to consider further possible improvements for this particular bend.

The next Community Forum will take place at Parwich Village Hall, hopefully around 12th November 2008, (DATE TO BE CONFIRMED).

Police Ringmaster – metal thefts

The latest Police Ringmaster message warns people to be wary of thefts of metal; unfortunately the rise in prices means that any any unsecured metal from manhole covers to machinery is at risk.

I would like to make you aware of the current rise in scrap metal thefts. This is occurring more on isolated, larger premises and haulage yards. They are looking for anything, whether it is scrap or not. A recent theft was of metal cages taken from farm premises at Grange Mill. Please be extra vigilant and report all vehicles/persons seen acting suspiciously in the area to Derbyshire Police.

There has been an increase in the theft of gardening equipment recently, mainly hedge trimmers, chainsaws, etc, from gardens, sheds & outbuildings. Ensure that such items are locked away securely. Make a note of serial numbers for your possessions, mark items with your postcode plus your house number or the first two letters of the house name and maybe take photographs.

Thieves find identifiable property more difficult to sell on. Often, property recovered by the police cannot be returned to the rightful owners simply because it cannot be identified.

If you require any home security advice, please call the Crime Reduction Officers on 0845 164 1644.

Here are few key points that were raised at the Safer Neighbourhood Meeting held in Tissington in July.

1.  The Matron at Whitworth Hospital, Darley Dale has asked that the services of this hospital’s minor A&E department be publicised as an alternative to the DRI as an advantage to our communities for it’s shorter waiting times.  Leaflets about their services are available and as soon as we have more details we will publish them on this website.

2. Concern was expressed about the visibility on roads, particularly on sections of the A515 due to overhanging trees and uncut verges.

3. Problem of HGV’s tailgating at 50-55mph and speeding motorbikes.  Also concern that lorries are using mobile phones illegally whilst driving through Ashbourne.

It was recommended that these meetings be held every 3 months in a different village hall each time.

For full minutes of the meeting….

Derbyshire Police have recently seen an increase in the number of reported incidents of ‘damage to’ and ‘theft from’ motor vehicles parked on streets in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.

We would like to ask you to report anyone seen acting suspiciously near unattended motor vehicles, to Derbyshire Police on 0845 164 1644.

Don’t give Criminals an easy ride:
Please check the security of your vehicle, always remove your in-car electronic equipment if possible and always take out the satellite navigation system devices as these are the most sought after equipment in your car. Remove the support cradle and suction pads and wipe away any suction pad marks on the windscreen or dashboard.

If you have a garage, please use it and lock it. If you do not have a garage, put the vehicle in a well lit area and avoid leaving personal belongings in unattended vehicles.

Thank you.

Last week, the night before collection a bag of papers destined for recycling were taken from outside a house in Parwich.  Not the crime of the century perhaps, but we’ve heard a lot about identity theft recently, and it was wondered if there could be a more sinister motive – fortunately this household shred any sensitive papers.  So just be aware.

However one good piece of news is that the big black fluffy cat has now been found and seems firmly at home.  Thanks to everyone for their vigilance.

Thank you to Rick G for sending in these messages.

If you see anything suspicious or something you are concerned about remember to think about calling the police and let us know on parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will put the relevant information on this site so everyone is aware.  We do not need to print your name.

Police Ringmaster Scheme

PARWICH.ORG received its first input as a member of the Ringmaster Scheme today:

Warning over online cashback banking scam – 23 June 2008

Trading standards are warning people of a new online banking scam telling them they are due a cash refund. The emails claim to be from a leading high street bank and ask people to follow a link in order to claim money. Derbyshire County Council’s trading standards team are warning people not to respond to any unsolicited emails.

An example of the latest scam email reads:”Your debit/cash card might receive a refund worth £289.40 as a result of points accumulated through online payments. “Please submit the reward request immediately and allow us 2 – 3 business days in order to process it and the money clear into your account.” Another email scam requests that people carry out “customer data verification” and asks them to login via a link on the page. By clicking on the link your computer may be vulnerable to attack from viruses or spyware.  (more…)
