Don’t forget that Friday is Film Night. Admission is free and refreshments will be available. Also don’t think because it is just a cartoon it is only for kids, it is recommended for grown ups too. It is based on detailed research in French restaurants, and had excellent reviews.

Sorry for the ******, but our licence means we can not advertise the film by name:
In the hilarious new animated-adventure, ********, a rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great chef despite his family’s wishes and the obvious problem of being a rat in a decidedly rodent-phobic profession. When fate places Remy in the city of Paris, he finds himself ideally situated beneath a restaurant made famous by his culinary hero, Auguste Gusteau. Despite the apparent dangers of being an unwanted visitor in the kitchen at one of Paris’ most exclusive restaurants, Remy forms an unlikely partnership with Linguini, the garbage boy, who inadvertently discovers Remy’s amazing talents. They strike a deal, ultimately setting into motion a hilarious and exciting chain of extraordinary events that turns the culinary world of Paris upside down. Remy finds himself torn between following his dreams or returning forever to his previous existence as a rat. He learns the truth about friendship, family and having no choice but to be who he really is, a rat who wants to be a chef.
This wonderful film has had unanimously good reviews:
“We could go on for hours about the delights of *******. The animation is superb, the vocal work flawless, the script witty, the central conflict between family ties and the pursuit of excellence subtly handled. The tasting of the eponymous (courgette based vegetable dish) is so expertly done that it’s sure to find a spot on any cinema-goer’s top twenty favourite scenes. Basically, this is a masterpiece. Don’t miss it.” BBC magazine
“It’s fantastically funny, exciting, appealing to children – and also a witty, literate essay on art and democracy, subtly arguing that “A great artist can come from anywhere.” Philip Horne, Daily Telegraph
“I’ve never experienced a film that could evoke flavour. This reeks of Paris”. Times
“Among its many, myriad delights, ****** is a film to make you love the rat.” Guardian

I’ve seen this film twice – once at the cinema and once on DVD – and I can highly recommend it. As Peter suggests, it’s one of those movies which children can enjoy on one level, but which adults can enjoy on another. The quality of the animation is breathtaking, and the way that the atmosphere of a busy kitchen in a working restaurant is captured is quite wonderful, with a real ring of truth about it. One of America’s top chefs was employed as a food consultant, and the crew spent a long time in his restaurant, observing the way that things work. As for the food itself: you would never believe that animated haute cuisine could look so delightful!
Watch out in particular for the terrifyingly snooty food critic, as voiced by Peter O’Toole – probably my favourite character!
