Thank you to Richard Tresidder for forwarding this information. Fanshawe Gate Hall has one of the most charming private gardens in Derbyshire, and the Ramsdens have worked very hard to make it accessible to as many people as possible, at the same time raising substantial funds for charity. If you have not visited these gardens you certainly should (though not on Sunday 22nd of June, as that day is Parwich’s Open Gardens).
Press Release
Derbyshire garden in Guardian’s ‘must-see’ list

The historic garden of Fanshawe Gate Hall in Holmesfield, Derbyshire will open under the National Garden Scheme on Sundays 22nd and 29th June and 6th and 13th July. Recommended as one of this year’s private gardens to visit (The Guardian 31st May), Fanshawe Gate attracts horticulturalists, painters and visitors of all ages from around the UK, and has a long record of charitable fund raising.
Several smaller gardens combine to create a tranquil setting for the 13th century Hall. Of particular interest are the traditional cottage borders set against striking stone features, the Elizabethan Knott garden, restored orchard, 16th century Dovecote and the 400-year-old tithe barn. The resident ducks and hens are popular with younger visitors.

Owners John and Cynthia Ramsden have welcomed hundreds of visitors to Fanshawe Gate since the garden first opened in 1993. Over £60,000 has been shared between Macmillan Cancer Relief, the Oesophageal Patients Association, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Christian Aid.

There will be something for everyone each Sunday – a garden quiz for the children, gardening advice and tips from owner Cynthia Ramsden and home-made refreshments. The garden opens from 11.00 am – 5.00 pm. Tickets cost £2.50, under 15s free.
