I spotted a dragonfly clinging to a clematis is our front garden so Bob took a photo – thought I’d share it with you.

Nice photo, but I believe the insect is a damsel fly – dragon flies being much bigger. I stand to be corrected.
I think the photo doesn’t do justice to the size – it was approx 4″ long and having ‘Googled’ it, I believe it is a female Golden Ringed Dragonfly.
It does not seem to be as big as that, knowing the size of the flowers would give a sense of scale.

You are correct,in essence dragonflies compound eyes are not separated which they are in damsels, and damsels fold the wings along the body when at rest and not at right angles as in your pic. I had seen something similar near Littlewood Farm about 10 days ago, but much smaller 2″ max long. Took a shot or two but light background and available camera made good pic impossible – nettles.
