There were surprisingly few at the Fire Safety meeting last night, but we all learnt important messages.

• Did you know that the Fire Service will supply and fit smoke alarms free of charge, and that modern alarms are sealed units that last for 10 years (no batteries to change)?
• Or if you are over 60, our own Brian, part of Derbyshire’s HandyMan Network, will supply and fit alarms free of charge – phone 0845 850 8013
• Keep room doors closed at night to keep safe
• Don’t use a chip fryer, a big source of fires.
• Hair straighteners, curling tongs and hairdryers can be a problem, as they become hot, and then are left on a surface which could ignite.
• Best not to leave the TV on standby at night, turn it off.
• Overloading electrical sockets with adaptors and multiways can be a problem.
• Best not to run the washing machine at night or when you are out- a fault could cause a fire.
