For anyone concerned about “suspected swine flu” in school, we have been asked to clarify the following: 1. the medical advice given to the person in question is that it is probably not swine flu; 2. treatment was given as a precaution because they suffer from asthma; and 3. the person in question seems now to be recovering fast and so has only been unwell for a day or two.

I guess it was just a pig of a cold…
I really hope you do not have to go through what I have been through for the last few days because, believe me it is nothing to laugh about.
I asked for this to be posted because other parents from school were understandably worried – not so the latest round of swine flu jokes could be told.
Parent of child who may have swine flu.
oops – sorry to upset you.
Debbie, knowing you, I am absolutely sure there was no intention on your part to cause offence. Don’t take it badly – people do react in ways they may later regret when under stress.
Sadly this is the kind of daft situation which results from a sensational media hype of a disease which is no more dangerous than many other influenza strains. Nobody would think twice of a flu joke normally and the media must realise their responsibility in reporting not to ruin peoples lives and cause strife.
As a scientist I am continually disgusted by the ignorance of reporting on a daily basis about popular science by media who have far too much air time and too little understanding of the issues on which they pontificate (or they trot out a tired press release from some opinionated scientist substantiated by little research and no understanding).
Now – where’s that soap box?
By the way ?????? I too am sorry that you were upset. I sincerely hope your child is well on the way to recovery (as I am sure they are).
I am pleased to hear that the child with suspected swine flu is recovering. It must have been an anxious few days for all concerned.
However it would’ve been nice had people refrained from making jokes about what was obviously a stressful time for the parents, who had obviously done the responsible thing at the time and notified the school and took all necessary precautions. I’m sure nobody meant to upset anybody but maybe think before you comment next time!
Once again, I do apologise. Bertie L was sent home with suspected swine flu, and as Bertie has been happily tearing around the village, I made my regrettable comment. It certainly wasn’t aimed at any child who was or is currently is ill.
Best wishes,
Debbie
