Our very own blogmeister Mike A has just had his 60 minutes of fame on the famous 4th plinth at Trafalgar Square. The opportunity was provided by Antony Gormley’s One and Other Project, which puts the people of the UK in a place normally reserved for statues of kings and generals. Mike’s performance can be seen by clicking here.
To the uninitiated, it may look like Mike is jigging around aimlessly. For those in the know, the performance is transformed with a wonderful soundtrack. You can dance along with Mike by clicking here and pressing the ‘play’ button at the exact moment Mike says “Go!”. You can see random people in the crowd dancing – they’ve downloaded the soundtrack onto their mp3 players and are grooving along with Mike.
Good on you Mike – wot a dancefest!

By his own admission, his dancing technique is largely based on “enthusiasm”.
I think there are a few moves Mike could learn from Tom Chambers. Maybe a session this weekend in the village hall?
I wouldn’t change a thing! He was perfect! Good on you, Mike.
Mike, you are a star.
Congrtulations on becoming a work of art!
(actually we all knew that anyway).
It was an INCREDIBLE experience! I loved every minute!
For anyone tempted to check out the archive video at http://www.oneandother.co.uk/participants/miketd – but who might understandably baulk at watching the full hour, I recommend fast-forwarding to the unplanned moment of Comedy Gold that takes me by surprise in the final minute.
There are also slideshows at http://www.flickr.com/photos/miketd/sets/72157622280785669/show/ and http://is.gd/3q8Er (click “slideshow” and then “fast”).
You couldn’t re-enact that final moment even if you had a Hollywood budget! Absolutely priceless.
Great performance Mike, it kept me amused whilst I was icing the wedding cake. As to the technique – I wouldn’t change a thing. – you will always be head and shoulders above the crowd!
I am not sure whether you are a genius or billy bonkers but either way, it kep us smiling and we have been practising the “stuck in the middle with you” move. I wonder if we could add the bottle moment as its own clip on the blog? And will you be producing a version where the music plays along with the video because I keep going out of synch?!
The bottle moment is certainly the “climax” of the show!
– Y’just couldn’t write it…..
Lynne – unfortunately we can’t produce excerpts for the blog, or a version with music. This is because the footage is owned by the project organisers.
My top tip for keeping in synch: the music is probably lagging a second or so behind the video, so just pause the video and then immediately un-pause it again. It did the trick for me.
There’s also a green square to the bottom right of the video screen, with a white square inside it. If you click on this square, then the video plays in Full Screen mode.
Mike, that was brilliant, I love the music and think you are a complete star for participating in the plinth experience, well done to your super groupie too spotted in the crowd there! We must create LOTS of opportunities to dance in the village, we love it too!
