The Parwich & District Local History Society website is now back on-line. We had had problems with our previous host and are now trying out justhost.com. Their charges are impressively low. Our site has a new address www.parwichhistory.org and we hope to continue to develop it, so do let us know any thoughts or ideas you have.
The Society can be contacted on parwichhistory@hotmail.com. We will try to up-date all the links here at parwich.org though we may miss some of the older posts (if so our apologies).

Doing some research on seventeenth century baptists I discovered the names of two Baptists from Parwich in the 1650s – John Row and John Tomlinson. Does this ring any bells with anyone at the Parwich History society? Are these names known? Is there any record of baptists in the vicinity at this time?
Roe and Tomlinson are both Parwich names. I was aware of a Quaker (Henry Gibbins) who emigrated to America in the 1680s, but have always been puzzled that there were so few nonconformists recorded here.
Will pass the information on to the Roe family history researchers.
My maternal 3 times Great Grandfather, George Swindell was born in Parwich circa 1780’s. We think he was a Labourer, maybe Ag.Lab. He married Sarah Lovatt who was born in Uttoxeter, Staffs. Their son Thomas George we think was born in Heybridge or Derby and became an Innkeeper. The next generation, George William Swindell, moved to London and became a successful carter hauling coal (presumably from Derbyshire coalfields). He eventually was
bank rupted when his men hamstrung 80 horses due to a national labour dispute in the late 1880’s/90.
I’ve noticed there are are no George Swindells in the 1841 census, so presume he’d moved away by then but wondered which of the local Swindell families he would have come from.
Can anyone help?

Hello,
My name is Debbie Rea and I am the niece of Donald Shields and cousin to Robert.
Robert has asked me to do an indepth study of Longcliffe Quarries (including other Shields endeavours). I was wondering if anyone there could compose a short history of Donald’s life in the area. I haven’t been able to find out that much about my uncle!
Kind regards,
Debbie Rea
(P.S. Donald and my mother, Katy were sisters)
Hello,
We are intending to do a clue trail around your village with a group from our walking club. Do you know of any map of the village showing alleyways as well as roads that we could use? The Ordnance Survey map of the area has insufficient detail.
Thank you.
