Parwich has clearly had another dollop of snow over Tuesday night. We’d be grateful if people from in and around the village would use the commenting facility on this post to share information on conditions and weather-related information that may be of use to others in our area.

Weather

Smithy Lane would be very difficult for anyone without a 4×4. There are still no tyre tracks on the road at 7.30am so nobody is really giving it a go. There has been some drifting with snow up to 9 inches in places.
QEGS is closed today due to the adverse weather conditions.
1/12/2010 – Due to the adverse weather conditions, school will be closed on Wednesday 1st December. We hope to reopen on Thursday 2nd December.
This information has been announced on Radio Derby and Ashbourne Radio throughout the morning.
A full comprehensive list of all school/college closures is available on http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/derby
RATHBONE CROFT
0745 hrs. Wednesday, 28cm. level snow, noboody moving. Walking is the only sensible way out, driving is out of the question.

The B5056 is very quiet at the moment. Only 3 or 4 four wheel drive vehicles have gone by in the last hour. The ruts are compacted snow with 3 inch depth in between.
The snow plough hasn’t been through so far (possibly in the night).
A good day to stay at home!

Dear School Choir,
It is with huge regret that in view of deteriorating weather conditions David Lewis (Founder of Young Voices) has made the decision to POSTPONE the Young Voices Concerts from the 1st, 2nd & 3rd December to alternative dates in the New Year.
All tickets are fully transferable at no additional cost; please keep your original tickets safe until further information is made available.
Safety is the overriding concern of school and the concert organiser has agreed there really is no choice in this matter given the adverse weather conditions across the county other than to cancel.
Once we have confirmed the new dates school will make the necessary arrangements and inform parents.

Just been out to find the woodpile. I measured 12 inches of snow. We are unlikely to get out today do not think that the pushchair will cope with the snow, was difficult yesterday in 6 inches of snow. If I let Sam and Izzy out in the snow I might loose them. Matt has been away and I am guessing from the above comments he will be unlikely to get back tonight.
Nick stranded in Chesterfield. A61 impassable last night (abandoned cars, not all snow!). He reports that Chesterfield is very quiet.
Josh is 11 today – no dad, no pressie, no cake!! All in the car in Chesser!!
So, any ideas on the best way back from Chesterfield – or should he stay there!!
Poor Josh, hope Nick makes it back soon. I do have stuff to make cakes if thats any use.
Matt has been in Coventry overnight and its not as bad there, in fact hardly any snow.
Hi Gill
I am off out to Janet’s to raid the bigest store cupboard in town – I am, however, rubbish at cake making so a soggy mess will probably ensue!
Do you need anything – or does any-one else?? The boys can deliver!
Hey – what about making a giant birthday cake in the snow? Picnics in the snow can be great fun – hot chocolate, sausage rolls, pizza, sausages, baked potato……I’m hungry just thinking about it. Josh can then have another party when his Dad gets home!
Val,
If you have not already been another carton, bottle of milk would be useful but think we are ok for everything else. I can bake cakes if you want, I’m not too bad at them.
Patti what a lovely idea, making me hungry as well! I’m not used to snow like this as being brought up in Manchester we did not get deep snow, the last snow like this I remember was in December 1981. The snow kept coming over my wellies when I was walking to school.
As ever, the Live Buxton Weather site has plenty of information on current conditions. The site has changed its address since earlier this year, and it can be now found at http://www.buxtonweather.co.uk/ (and linked in our WEATHER section in the blog sidebar).
BBC Travel News also confirns the “hazardous driving conditions on A515 in both directions” between Ashbourne and Buxton:

Does anyone in the village have a plow attachment for their truck? I’m wondering if we should approach the Parish Council for one? What do people think?

PS Snow over the top of my wellies out back! Been here over 20 years, and I’ve never seen it like this before. According to my sources, the last big snow like this was 1979! I’m wondering if anyone has photos that could be scanned and then posted on the blog? It would be fun to compare!
It would be great to be able to plough up Creamery Lane and some of the other smaller roads. Today isn’t so much of a problem, but when everyone else is getting out and about and we still can’t move cars, then it is a pain.
I just measured 16″ of snow in our back garden and that is not drifted snow.
I agree Jane, being right up Creamery Lane we usually have to watch as others can get out and we are still stuck. Snow over the top of my wellies and had to dig out my wood pile.
1/12/2010 – Due to the adverse weather conditions, school will be closed on Thursday 2nd December. We hope to reopen on Friday 3rd December.
This information will also be announced on Radio Derby and Ashbourne Radio.

Thank you
I think Denis Stone has got a snow plough for sale in Fenny Bentley. You can see it at the side of the road, on the right hand side as you leave the village towards Ashbourne.
Many thanks to James Slater who has cleared the snow up Creamery Lane with his JCB and also very kindly cleared a path for us to the muck heap to make our lives a whole lot easier. By the way, several people have enquired about the horses and they just LOVE the snow.
James, any chance of tackling Croft Avenue?
THANK YOU JAMES!!!! Any chance of doing the parking lot by the tennis court? You are fab!!!!

“You aint seen nothing yet”. WINTER 1947, snowing on the return to school after Christmas Hoildays. Deep snow when Easter Holidays started, and giant snowballs on the playing field on return to school for Summer term.
It lasted for three months. Many more memories of ’47 where this came from. Anyone interested stick Winter 1947 into Google photo’s
