Our first pair of swallows returned today – they swirled and chattered around the stables, diving in and out of the doors.
We are always happy to see them and feel that summer is coming.

Summer swallows?
Tuesday April 5, 2011 by Mike A

My father in law used to note the arrival dates on the brickwork when he was converting the barn, sadly they are now covered up with plaster.
I hate to cause any controvesy, yes really, but all the birsd flying around that I have seen over the last couple of days that look like swallows, are in fact house martins. The shape of the tail is quite distinctive. Colin B
Sorry Colin but I think these are swallows – JFS now has photo’s to prove it and I hope they will be posted soon.
Then again I could be wrong and we have had house martins nesting here for the last thirty years.
Okay, biologist daughter has just told me that ours are swallows – house martins have white throats and rumps and white feathered legs. Swallows have bare legs and red throats, besides the obvious longer tails.
OK. OK I give in. But I have seen many house martins but no swallows yet.
