The first pair of swallows have returned to Blanche Meadow this morning. So lovely to hear their chattering and watch them dive bombing the horses. Anyone else had any return yet?

What marvellous news – thank you Fiona. I’ve been scanning the skies in vain in the hope of seeing these harbingers of Summer, and of aerial beauty. Perhaps I’ll be lucky tomorrow?
Knowing what difficult times swallows face currently I’m about to chop off the top few inches of my outhouse door and build a shelf just under the roof to encourage nesting – they need all the help we can give them.
Yesterday, I saw this marvellous video and I hope you enjoy it as much as I:
Best wishes!

Anthony , you might be interested to know that we after we renovated the stone stables at Blanche Meadow, we put up small wooden ledges along the wall, about 8inches down from the ceiling and the swallows soon started using these. However, it is interesting to note that the first returnees always bag the wooden stables first and the later ones have to make do with the ‘man made’ ledges in the stone stables.
Should you be interested, John F’S has loads of amazing photos that he has taken over years, of the exploits of our sparrows.
When it is time for them to leave, we have counted more than 60 congregating on our roof, getting ready for their long journey south.

Sorry, having a dippy moment here, I mean swallows of course – not sparrows! Interestingly the sparrow ‘terraces’ that we put up have not been quite so successful.

Thanks Patti (sorry for mis-attributing the authorship of your previous post!).
Finally saw a lone swallow earlier today up at Alsop en le Dale, being blown about over the lane by the gusting wind. What a homecoming!
I used to live in Norfolk and had the same pair of swallows nest in exactly the same location (garage with a half-door) for four years, until I moved.
Shall search this site for John F’s photos of your swallows – thanks for the heads up.
