Barley straw for the strawberry patch

After this nice drop of rain the strawberries are in flower and the fruit are developing well. Now is the time to protect the fruit from damage by the soil and slugs by laying barley straw around each plant. I have just acquired a bale of barley straw from a local farmer. I have far more than I need and if any Parwich gardeners want to protect their strawberries with barley straw, they are welcome to help themselves to my surplus straw – just come round to Flaxdale House with a black bin bag and I will gladly supply their needs.
