Our Weatherman in the Village says:
Apologies for the missing statistics and forecast last week, we were engaged in the Wateraid Mountain challenge 200, where the charity Wateraid aim to get 200 of the UK’s highest peaks climbed on the same day raising both money (from spronsorship) and awareness of the Wateraid charity. Wateraid is an international charity that transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation – something we in Parwich can thankfully take for granted.
Our chosen mountain was my favourite – Snowdon in North Wales, and our team convened at the Tanronnen Inn in Bedgellert on Friday evening for a sharp start on the Saturday morning. The forecast was really excellent, and so, after a few pints, I suggested that we aim to see sunrise on the mountain. Well of course, at this time of year, sunrise is pretty early, so it took a few more beers before I got the approval of the rest of the team to get up at 3:30am for a 4am start. It became clear pretty quickly that this was a good call as the conditions could not have been better. Clear skies and not a breath of wind meant a once-in-a-lifetime experience of Snowdon.
I have climbed this beautiful mountain a few times, but have never experienced it under such benign conditions – you could hear a pin drop on the Pyg Track on our way up – it was glorious. We got to the summit at about 7am and were down in time for breakfast! Having eaten our packed “lunches” on the summit, and toasted (with water) the fantastic views and the acknowledgement that some women of Nepal achieve such a walk daily, just to get their water. A big thankyou to everyone in Parwich who sponsored us and helped to raise over £1,200 for Wateraid. It’s not too late to add to that if you would like to help (please follow this link) – it’s a very worthwhile cause, and all donations are really gratefully received.
The two attached photo’s are the view of the mountain at 4:30am as the sunrise casts an orange glow over Snowdon, and the second is our Wateraid team coming off the summit soon after 7am.
Anyhow, back to the weather…………. The lovely conditions of last weekend deteriorated in mid-week, but some settled conditions seem to have become re-established, and the early part of next week looks reasonably fine. Let’s hope it continues for Open Gardens next weekend.
