‘The Blooming Dales’ celebrates beautiful district
The beautiful gardens and community spaces of the Derbyshire Dales are to be celebrated in a new competition.
‘The Blooming Dales‘ is the idea of this year’s Chairman of the District of the Derbyshire Dales Councillor Peter Slack.
A keen gardener himself, Councillor Slack, who is Chairman of Middleton in Bloom and helps to maintain the village’s Millennium Garden, wants local people to nominate their neighbours’ – or their own – well-kept residential gardens for recognition.
He is also looking for nominations for community spaces – including school gardens – in a competition that will feature separate awards in the southern, central and northern areas of the Derbyshire Dales.
Councillor Slack said:
I may be biased, but to me the Derbyshire Dales is a fantastic place to live, no more so than at this time of the year when gardens are bursting with colour.
“I’ve been interested in horticulture since I was a small boy and have entered various shows down the years. While other competitions recognise what entire towns and villages do in terms of flowers and colour, I think it’s great to celebrate the work of individuals and small groups of people who put a smile on the faces of neighbours and visitors where they live.
Before the end of July, Councillor Slack simply wants people to nominate a residential garden or colourful community space online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/thebloomingdales, on paper forms available on request from the District Council’s reception desks or by calling 01629 761133. Later, those making the nominations will be asked to provide a photograph and a 100 word description.
