We have received the following information from Buxton and High Peak Samaritans:
Volunteers sought for Buxton branch of Samaritans
Could you support people who are struggling to cope and need someone to turn to? If so, Samaritans of Buxton and High Peak are looking for volunteers.“If you’d like to know more about learning the skills needed to support people in distress or despair, we would love to hear from you.” says Director Maria Kenyon.
Information events for potential new recruits are taking place at 22 Hardwick Street in Buxton (on the road between Argos and Potters) at 7pm on Friday 10 April; Monday 8 June; Wednesday 11 November and Saturday 8 August at 1.30pm.
New volunteers take part in a selection process, which is followed by a comprehensive training course, including mentoring, delivered by experienced Samaritans’ volunteer.Volunteers are asked to commit to regular three-hour shifts a week, mostly in the evenings or night. They work from the branch listening to and supporting people who call the helpline. They also answer emails and texts, or speak to people who call in for face-to-face support.
“Samaritans’ work is hugely varied and our volunteers find it incredibly rewarding. We are a very diverse team and despite our demanding work we manage to have a good deal of fun together. We would be very happy to hear from anyone who thinks they would like to join us.” said Maria.
