Over the last few days the pond has drained. I know it has been dry recently but even in the hot weather last year I didn’t see it as low as this. Has something happened up steam? Can anyone shed any light on the problem? Fiona H

Hi. Not from your part of the world, but dried up ponds are becoming increasingly common. Too many people on our planet pumping too many aquifers dry. As underground water wells are pumped out, the surface ponds they feed disappear. Could be something else, but this is a likely explanation.
Fiona, have you looked just a few yards upstream from the pond. There is a culvert that brings the stream that runs under Main Street down Church Walk and across the new part up the grave yard, then under the Brook between Nether Green House and Farm, under the pond and eventually it feeds into the Brook on the other side of the road.
This culvert used to back up when there was a lot of water, so a hole was made between the floor of the Brook and the roof of the culvert just up from the pond to ease pressure in the culvert. However this has the side effect that, unless the Brook is diverted round the hole when there is only a little water, the Brook flows down into the culvert and so bypasses the pond.
If you look in the Church Yard, by the wall that runs along by Church Walk, you will see a manhole cover near the seat. I am fairly sure that the connecting pipes that run from this manhole towards Mr F’s place are broken and blocked. I reported this years ago but I do not think anything was done about it. One of the grave diggers broke the pipe. This surface water I think used to discharge to the brook.
you guys have been drinking it
