CULLAND HALL OPEN GARDENS AND SPECIALIST PLANT FAIR
SUNDAY 12TH JUNE 2016, 11am – 4pm.
It was twenty years ago that the owners of Culland Hall embarked on creating a memorable garden at their home. Years of dedication have come to fruition to produce an exquisitively painted corner of Derbyshire….walled water gardens edged with cool white allium….hot reds and vibrant oranges ignite the kitchen garden, an old fashioned potager bursting with fruits and vegetables for the kitchen, a woodland walk with an autumnal palette of burnt sienna and ochre, painterley coloured double borders of sky blues, bruised purples, deep clarets and blowsy pink peonies all rival Giverny in their splendour. As owner Lucy comments, “Gardening is really just painting with plants.”
The open gardens have gone from strength to strength – this will be their tenth consecutive year. Culland has proved to be a firm favourite with plant lovers who return year after year, not only to see the ever changing gardens but to purchase plants from the specialist nurseries (some RHS) who make the annual pilgrimage a firm date in their diaries. A selection of gardening antiques, botanical prints and other delights are also there to tempt.
All profits go directly to The Mid Derbyshire Association for Mobile Physiotherapy – a small local charity that enables the housebound to receive essential physiotherapy in their own home. Culland’s dedicated group of fundraisers work tirelessly throughout the year and managed to raise a staggering £7,000 last year.
The bustling committee offer homemade scones and cakes in the walled courtyard whilst the local Scout Group cheerfully ferry wheelbarrows crammed with plants to waiting cars.
This quiet corner of England bursts into bloom on this day, before retiring gracefully for yet another year.
Entrance: £5. Children free. Free parking. All profits to MDAMP (see below).
Culland Hall is just 6 miles south of Ashbourne and 7 miles north of Derby, off the A52 at Brailsford and will be well signposted on the day. Culland Hall, Culland, Ashbourne, Derbyshire DE6 3BW
