No. 3 April 2017
It’s great to see Big Bill back at the helm at Leatherbritches. Mrs. Monty and I called in to pick up a few plants and found Bill in top form. Our quick stop took an hour and a half (boy can Bill talk, 🙂 ) and we came away loaded with a great selection of plants not to mention some great tips on dealing with slugs and snails. This involved vaseline, garlic and copious amounts of boiling water so probably best not to go into details here!
For this month’s project, plant of the month and garden jobs,
Plant of the Month
Magnificent Magnolia
There’s been some fabulous examples on view around the village this month. Here is our baby –
Magnolia Loebneri Leonard Messel. It’s currently about a metre tall and sits in a pot near our back door where we get a great view of its’ two toned flowers. Apparently fully grown it can get to 8 metres tall by 8 metres wide. Think we will need a larger pot.
Project of the Month
With all the weeding Mrs Monty has had me doing this month do you think I’ve had time for any projects? Though I did fix up some trellising for her everlasting sweet peas and put a couple of shelves up in her potting shed.
Any Answers?
Anyone know the name of this little beauty?
Jobs around the Garden
This months jobs
Sowing French and Runner Beans (mine in pots inside)
Sow hardy veg such as carrots, beetroot and peas
All potatoes should now be planted
Sow tomatoes. Pot on earlier sown tomatoes but keep under cover for now (cold this week)
Direct Sow hardy annuals such as marigolds and poppies
Plant out half hardies such as Cosmos (wait till after this week)
Apply Weed and Feed to lawn
Get on top of weeds, slugs and aphids now, don’t let them get a hold.
Any handy tips of other things we should be doing now?
Until the next time….
Monty Gone to Leatherbritches (again)
