Hi Monty
In the last couple of years I have successfully treated my nepeta (catmint) to the ‘Chelsea chop’ around this time, but will this work for perennial geraniums? Are there other cottage garden plants that might benefit….? Thanks, Emma S

Hi Monty

We too have successfully done it to Catmint over the years. Another to get the treatment is Phlox. My understanding is it’s best for those later flowering perennials that tend to produce side shoots. I’m not sure it would be successful on perennial geraniums which we usually deadhead and cut back a bit after flowering which can result in a second flowering later in the season.
When Chelsea chopping we tend not to chop the whole plant but just about 1/3. Even chop a second 1/3 a little later to get more flowers later.
Any gardening experts out there with an answer?
