PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Two for the price of one this week, but it is a bit like the curates egg, good in parts. I think we can safely say that our stay in the exhausted heights of the top division in the Thursday League is rapidly coming to an end. Was it Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck who said ‘it is not the winning, but the taking part that counts’ or similar words, or perhaps a French feller on about the Olympics, good old Pierre.
Tuesday League.
July 25 – Away – Bakewell.
The week off did us a little bit of good for this weeks match. We shared the four games, two apiece, but thankfully our pairs defeated their opponents with less scores against us. As you all know points mean prizes, or wins in our case. Dawn and Tony and Edith and Rick both managed to win 21 – 10. Whilst Harry B and Dot fought like demons to get 14 points. Best not mention John and Pat B’s result except to say they lost. The final score however was a win 64 – 62. Not a very big margin, but big enough. Our first win in ages.
August 1 – Home – Bradwell.
The rain had poured down for most of the day and there was a possibility that the match could not take place, however we all prevailed in the end and thank goodness we did. The troops were in storming form with Pat B and Harry B leading the way with a 21 – 2 win. Edith and Rick powered home 21 – 9, and even our esteemed captain Dawn, ably supported by Dot, won 21 – 11. To put the icing on the cake Dennis and Clara E charged home winning 21 – 15. Parwich 84, Bradwell 37.
Doubt if we will get to such giddy heights next week though.
Next Match – 8 August – Away – Wirksworth – 6.30pm.
Thursday League
July 27 – Away – Bradwell – 1.45.
The good thing about going to Bradwell is the journey is a nice one, the rest of the afternoon needs to be forgotten quickly. We only managed to win one game out of the three doubles and six singles played. Four defeats in a row now. Will the run ever end? Dennis and Audrey B put up a good show before accepting defeat 14 – 21. After the doubles we trailed 32 – 63.
Only one win in the singles, I can hardly believe it, although we came mighty close in three other games. Even so we were down 70 – 88. The final score, Bradwell 151(only 2 points away from a maximum 153), Parwich 102.
Unfortunately we are playing the top of the league next. Hang onto your hats.
Home – Hope Works – 3 August – 1.45pm.
Playing the top of the league is daunting enough at the best of times, but playing them in the form we are in – HELP. However we did not do so bad. The star performance of the day was Audrey B and Sue A beating a really good pair 21 – 18. Our other pairs did well too Clara and Dennis losing 16 – 21 and similarly Tony A and Ian J going down 14 – 21. A terrific show.
Now what this team do is only turn up to most matches with 9 players. We on the other hand say if you come to the green you get a game even if you are on crutches. Playing with
only 9 players is perfectly within the rules, but it does mean of course that 3 players have a very distinct advantage of getting used to the green. In the singles the 3 players who had already played in the doubles all won and two out of the remaining 3 didn’t. I rest my case. The final score although a loss was a very creditable result Parwich 116, Hope Works 139. At least we won’t have to play them next year.
No match next week in this league. It’s the annual Charity Match in aid of the Greenaway Centre.
MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.
Last week we were positively inundated with people ‘having a go’ on the green. You could not move for jacks (the little white thing you aim at) and Jills. Come down next week and get involved. Bring the kids. It’s school holidays for the passed week. I bet they are bored out of their heads.
PS. If you can’t make Mondays just let Tony (724) or John (455) know and we will arrange an alternative.
John B.
