Starring the wonderful Anthony Hopkins as Freud, the film is set on the eve of WWII and towards the end of his life. Freud invites iconic author C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode) for a debate over the existence of God. Exploring Freud’s unique relationship with his daughter Anna and Lewis’ unconventional romance with his best friend’s mother, the film interweaves past, present and fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey. Freud called upon the young Oxford don to appear before him to discuss the ideas of his recent book which paints Freud as an arrogant and ignorant materialist. Over several meetings and days, the two geniuses discuss their lives and worldviews as they grapple with the most difficult questions of life — the existence of God, the nature of suffering, the morality of sex and sexuality, the inevitability of death, and the ethics of suicide.
