Whilst looking through an old programme I have found some words written by Denis Laycock, I feel it is important to reshare them as they provide a valuable insight into our Wakes celebrations…

‘Since the formation of the Loyal Laurel and Crown Lodge, the Parwich Branch of the Independent Order of the Oddfellows, in 1836, June 29th, St Peter’s Day, has become an important date in our village’s annual calendar.

To begin with, it would have been marked by the Club Walk, a Church Service (with a fine for those members not attending), and a dinner in one of the village inns. Other celebrations also took place, however in the 1850’s there is even a record of a dancing bear visiting the village!

Later on, Funfairs began attending. These included Sykes Fair and later Tommy Rae. Their arrival was greeted with great excitement amongst the children. Work in school was almost impossible until teachers had taken them to the Green to see the Fair. There is even a record of Mr Hampson treating each child to a ride!

Over the years the pattern of Wakes has changed. The Walk and Feast was moved first to a Monday, later to the Saturday nearest to June 29th. Sports and a mid-week social were added to the agenda. Then in 1974 a new organizing committee – the Parwich Carnival and Recreation Committee was formed, largely due to the driving force of the then Vicar, Christopher Read, former headmaster Leslie Fearn and several villagers old and new. Wakes celebrations grew from the weekend to a week-long celebration, with new events developing – the Hill Race, the Ball Race, a ferret and a horse racing night and the traditional Oddfellows dance and raffle on the final Friday night. Occasional five-a-side football competitions were staged on Nethergreen. Over forty years ago the Notts DA Camping and Caravan Club ‘discovered’ Parwich and they have been visiting each year ever since.

Over the years, the Carnival Committee has organised other village events, including the staging of pantomimes, an annual bonfire on November 5th and assisting in village celebrations of national events.’

As we draw near to Wakes Saturday 2026 the Oddfellows Walk, Dinner and the Carnival still remain at the heart of our celebrations and hopefully will do for many years to come.

Denis Laycock is the longest serving member of the Carnival and Recreation Committee and has been a member since 1975! For this support, unrivalled knowledge and good humour we thank you Denis – we look forward to seeing the Wakes waistcoat soon!

These are informal occasions for anyone who feels they would like to pause and worship for 15-20 mins with Revd Nicola.  All are welcome – no advance notice (or ongoing commitment) required. Start time 9:30am.  At Thorpe we use the Northumbria Community morning prayer liturgy at other churches Church of England Common Worship morning prayer or NC as feels best to those present.

Currently FitzHerbert School collective worship is held nearly every Monday in term time in Fenny Bentley church at 09:10. Community members, young or old, are all welcome.

On Thursday 14 May at 7pm, there will be a meeting in church to discuss plans for this years flower festival.

The festival is scheduled for Sunday 19 July, with the decoration of the church taking place the day before.

We need lots of help to make this event happen. Cleaning the church, delivering leaflets, collecting and conditioning flowers, arranging flowers, baking, tombola, and serving refreshments.

If you would like to help, please come along to the meeting.

Alternatively if you would like to be involved but are not able to come to the meeting please let me know before the 14 May.

We have noticed a number of rats recently on the Green, running across our driveway and under cars parked on the Green.

I have asked Chris Fry to come and put baits in our front garden but I’m not sure this will address the whole problem as they’re coming from elsewhere on the Green. I’m reluctant to put bait on the Green in case we have some sort of liability but I’m happy to be advised.

I have reported it to Derbyshire Dales but I’m not confident they’re going to do anything   Unfortunately it can only be submitted as a complaint.

If you know where they’re coming from or have any suggestions, please do let me know

Based on a true story by the naturalist, Helen McDonald, the film explores how when Helen’s father passes away, she is knocked sideways by grief and loses herself in memories of their time birding and exploring the natural world together. She becomes obsessed with the idea of training her own goshawk, and so she brings the fearsome bird Mabel home to her life as an academic at Cambridge University.

Helen fills the freezer with hawk food and turns off her phone, ready to embark on the long, strange business of trying to train this wildest of animals. But as she labours to tame Mabel, a grieving Helen undergoes an untaming of her own. A record of a spiritual journey, H IS FOR HAWK is a story about memory and nature and how it might be possible to reconcile death with life and love. Starring Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson.
